How could 'Tennessee Waltz' miss, or 'Folsom Prison Blues' or 'Your Cheatin' Heart' or 'Ghost Rders in the Sky'?

Roses for Mama -- C.W. McCall
Hello Country Bumpkin -- Cal Smith
Okie From Muskogee -- Merle Haggard
On the Wings of a Dove -- Ferlin Husky
He'll Have to Go -- Jim Reeves

Bonus pick
El Paso -- Marty Robbins

It's pretty obvious that you can't make a list of just five of the greatest country songs.
It's also obvious that the writing in country songs has just stomped the crap out of the writing of rock and pop songs.

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let's pretend that we're together, all alone
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low
And, you can tell your friend there with you, he'll have to go

Look how much you know that the singer doesn't even tell you in spoken words.

Well, I have two favorite voices in country music...George Jones, and Don Williams...the song He Stopped Loving Her Today, is one of my favorites...its just perfect...

Just about anything Don Williams sings is a favorite of mine...he has a perfect smooth voice...a few of his songs that are my favorites, are Amanda, Good Ole Boys, and my absolute favorite, Gypsy Woman(a tune rarely, if ever found on any of his CDs, but an absolute favorite of every Don Williams fan)...

While Johnny's voice and phrasing are a huge part of what makes 'Sunday Morning Comin' Down' worthy of this list, it is worth noting that the tune was penned by Kris Kristofferson - who was cruelly cursed with an inability to decently sing any of the wonderful songs he wrote.

"...'Tennessee Waltz' miss, or 'Folsom Prison Blues' or 'Your Cheatin' Heart'..."

These three songs are dedicated to former Tennessee State Senator John Ford. Anyone familiar with Ford will catch my drift.

Why Don't We Get Drunk (And Screw) by Jimmy Buffett

Well, Buffett's kinda country.

Speaking of Buffett, I guess I'll have a hurricane party tonight.

I'm due east of Lake Okeechobee (the little circle in the lower middle).

Eeek. Man, I hate the ocean. It's pretty, but it shore scares the boogers outta me. Make sure your hatches are battened.

And I know Buffett isn't really country. I just wanted to add that title to your thread.

My favorites are Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash.

I abso-frickin-lutely despise new country.

'Tryin' To Reason A With Hurricane Season'...great song. "...I stood up and tried to focus, I hoped I wouldn't have to look far; I knew I could use a bloody-mary, so I stumbled next door to the bar..."

AMEN!!! New country sucks. The only one even appealing at all is Toby Keith, but his Ford commercials suck. And he did those crappy 10-10 commercials with Terry Bradshaw a while back. And to bring everything back around again, didn't Terry Bradshaw release a country album?

No order:

Red Dirt Road
Amarillo by Morning
The Race is On
Cherokee Fiddles
Faded Love (by Patsy Cline or Bob Wills)
Hey, Good Lookin'
Jambalaya (on the Bayou)
Stay All Night (stay a little longer)

Too many good ones to limit to five (or ten)

Oh, and King of the Road.
