Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Well, in the registry, for the .exe extension there was an "application" setting that was set to the adobe acrobat program. Once I removed that stuff started working again.

Do you know how to change the extension application settings, without hacking the registry?

Seems odd that Adobe would put it there.

No, I don't. I really hate playing with registry settings, I know better than that. But google - the only tool I could use - didn't have any better ideas. Actually I found the registry thing from a site talking about how to get your .exe files to show an "open with" dialog... nobody else seems to have this problem.

Doesn't it! I can't believe that they really would. Somehow something got screwed up with my machine. I'd really, really rather not reinstall.

OK.. call up the Control Panel, then Folder Options. Select the "File Types" tab. It will list all of the file extensions that have file types assigned to them, and will let you delete old ones or assign new ones.

Oh, neat. I don't know that this would have worked, since it's probably a .exe file that Adobe would have tried to open. I couldn't use add/remove programs, for instance. And there isn't an entry for .exe. But that's a valuable tool, I'm surprised I didn't know how to do it.

Maybe if you had it open while you loaded Acrobat? Then if Acrobat mucks anything up, you can have it ready to un-muck.

That could work. I am nervous about that software, though. I bet someone has a freeware nearly-as-good program, I'm good at finding freeware.

Which version of Acrobat Reader were you trying to load? Maybe a newer (or older) version would work better.

The latest version, but version 6 did it to me last time. I really don't like Adobe.

Found out something today: burning sizeable DVDs frags the everlovin'frap outta your hard drive. Could be the software I'm using, but from now on I'm pausing between editing and burning to do a defrag.

What software are you using?
