The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well...I'm back. Not sure how it went. I am truly bad at situational type interview questions, no matter how much I rehearse. I just blank. And I have a really, really hard time with questions like "Think of a time when you had a co-worker who you truly did not get along with, and explain how you made the situation better." I guess I've just been lucky, because I can't really think of any really awful co-workers.

*sigh*

Also found out that it's a temporary position, with no chance of becoming permanent. Now, I'd heard it was a contract position, but I'd heard two YEARS, with the possibility of extention. Three months is a bit different. I really, really, really don't want to have to go through this whole job search again anytime soon.

Also their other site is about at the Wyoming border, and they don't recoup milage. It's actually a rather nice drive, and there isn't really any traffic in that direction, but it'll cost me in gas, not to mention be really interesting come winter. So I dunno. I know beggars can't be choosers, but...

They're interviewing four candidates total and will be making a decision by the end of the week. I don't know if I should hope or not. I'd still really like the college position. I wish they'd call. I'm hoping I'll hear from them today or tomorrow. The time gap is tricky, though...if I get interviewed by the college even by the end of the week, I likely won't hear back until middle of next week. And if I get offered this one first...I dunno. It is a muddle.

Now Jen is threatening to get Tam a Barbie pink bonnet.

He would NOT be pleased.

He's been weird lately. Does this odd two syllable meow that sounds like he's trying to talk.

Well if it's a temp job, you shouldn't feel bad about telling them that you got an offer for a permanent job somewhere else.

Except that it's a contract - if I take it, I commit for three months.

It just makes me queasy thinking I'd have to go through interviews and searches and stress again in such a short period.

Miss Emily once ran afoul of perm solution. For a long time (months? years?) every time she got wet, she smelled like she was having her fur done.

Bummer, Rosie. One question to ask yourself is "Does it pay well enough that I won't lose money buying gas and driving to the different sites?" On the plus side, you would have work experience and references that are local. Will keep praying that you get offered the job you really want.

If gas prices stay where they are...it'd hurt, for sure. Especially if I didn't switch to a smaller vehicle. Still have my van.

But it's true that it'd be helpful to have local experience.

If I get a call back from the college saying "Thanks, but no thanks", it'd be a no-brainer to take this despite the downsides. I guess. But I'm worried that I'll get lucky enough to go back for a second interview at the college and be waiting to hear back on that when this job calls. And of course...these folks could say "Thanks, but no thanks," too...but you know what I mean! After all this time, I'd be afraid to say "Can you hang on until I hear back on this one other position?"

I guess I just gotta trust it'll all work out.

But I still want the college position. It felt better.

Hey...y'all supported my own son when he was in Iraq last year.

Pretty cool gifts...the best being a warmed, patriotic feeling!

Heh...poor kitty. Better than skunk, though!

We mostly got pretty fortunate in that respect, considering how many skunks were around. Our Golden got skunked just slightly once, but that's it. Still, that was bad enough. We washed him with about three different things...tomato, some special stuff from the pet store, and regular shampoo, and he was tolerable when dry.

When wet, on the other hand...ick.

SirKit's sister just sent me a link to the NOAA website that has satellite images of the aftermath of Katrina. I found where my sister's house used to be. Here is the picture

If you look at the top of the picture, to the right, you'll see a brown roof. Just below and to the left is a gray roof. Look directly above that gray roof and you'll see a light spot. That's the sand covering what WAS the slab of Brenda's house. If you look down her lot, going away from the water, you can just make out a roof. It's just below and to the right of the brown roof on the adjacent lot. That is the other house on the property, that they were renting out. It was moved about 30' north of it's original location and has a couple of trees through it.

The house with the gray roof is a HUGH home that was just finished last year. The inspector told them that they shouldn't try to repair because he can't guarantee that the foundation is still in decent shape. They're going to have to tear it down and start over. The big white house at the bottom of the picture is Dr. Sanghani's house. The storm gutted every building on that property. You can see the outline of the tennis court, covered in sand.

Everyone down there is still astounded at the amount of destruction that far away from the eye of the storm. Camille didn't do nearly that much damage. My sister, Joanne, heard somebody on the radio the other day saying that Camille killed more people this time than she did back in 1969 because people were so complacent. They thought that if they rode Camille out, surely they could withstand Katrina. Sadly, many were wrong.

Good grief. What it must have looked like when that was happening.

They must just be sick. I pray for their strength if they choose to rebuild and try again to enjoy that spot.

Three month assignments can be tough.... I've sure been there. It'll keep you busy enough, but only delay your job search till later.

If they offer it to you, then you certainly should make a careful call to the college and say you have another offer that you do not want to take if there will be one coming from the college.

I just wish the college would call in a hurry. They said mid-week...so I'm figuring they likely did some discussing today and will call tomorrow and let me know if I've made it to the next stage.

And I suppose you're right...if I DO get the interview at the college, I can always call them if I get an offer from the other company and ask them how things are.

I still really want the college job. I could probably live with this one, but it didn't feel comfortable. And the idea of having to search again just...I don't know how I'd deal with it. It'd be horrible, even if I found something far more quickly.
