Even though you're in SD, you might want to have a look here, if only for ideas: Log Homes by Kuhns Bros.

As one w/a bit of expertise, I'd recommend them.

Some very cool designs there. I plan to give it a closer look tonight. The "loyalsock' design is very close to what I have come up with only I want all the rooms larger, and want a fireplace in the master bedroom. Thanks for posting it.

But....their prices!

The Williams family was inspired by a tornado. The tornado destroyed their home in North Carolina and left them with little more than a wasteland of fallen trees. They had no experience with log construction, but learned to become resourceful with what they had. They ultimately built a 4,300 square foot log home for just $15,000!
