FR Baseball discussion thread: W/E/ 8/14

Posted on 08/15/2005 4:00:00 PM PDT by ken5050

Hi all..sorry for the delay..we had a violent T-storm pass through last night..lost cable and internet until a little while ago...Interesting week that just was..races are starting to shape up..some of the pretenders have given up the ghost, and we're gonna purge them from our lists. My Metsies are burnt toast..they had a very, very, VERY bad week..the collision probably keeps Beltran and Cameron out for the season..and yesterday, in a few pitches, Pedro went from a near no-no, to a big Oh NO!!..so..let's begin...

That's a good question. I say choice 1. Pap would be great and Hansen is an unknown quantity, but could be a stud. Foulke has mental issues that can't be fixed with knee surgery.

Timlin, Bradford, and Myers have been light's out, basicly, and I'll take my chances with those 3 guys in my bp.

I'd add that if we get Foulke back and he's Foulke 2004 and we have Jeremi Gonzales as a long man, we have a world championship bullpen.

Is Jeremi Gonzalez turning into the new Tanyon Sturtze or what?

Thanks for the invite. After the Zircon-backs horrible season last year I said that a good season this year would be .500. I never would have thought that it would be good enough for the pennant.

Are you watching this slaughter of our BoSox by the LA Angels? If you're asleep, I don't blame you for not bothering with this late-night game. Geesh, Wakefield just got clobbered (twice?) by Darin Erstad. Mike Myers warming up now. Manny has been pretty useless tonight, both in batting and in the field. Angels over Red Sox 4-0... :-(

Ugh... Mike Myers' first pitch: A three-run homer by Juan Rivera! 7-0 Angels.

Ugh again... the Sox were chippin' away, gaining a few runs. 8-3 Angels, then Tito again mysteriously puts this loser pitcher Remlinger on the mound. Now 10-3 Angels... :-(

I watched the first hour of it. Wake was doing okay until he got into the 5th inning.

FYI..interesting stats to ponder...

Red Sox lead Yankees by 4. BOTH Yankees and Red Sox have 43 games left..

25 of Boston's 43 remainign are at Fenway, where they are 38-18....BEST home record in the major leagues..

23 of the Yankees 43 left are on the road, where the Steinbrenners are 27-31

Boston is 8-4 against The D-Rays this season, the Yankees are 4-9. THAT is the 4 game differential in the standings, and why Pinella may be the manager in the Bronx next season...

Great post.

I wonder if Lou would take the job, if offered.

Yes, Wake was doing pretty well in last night's game until he got hit in the shin, which happened in the 5th inning, I think. It all went downhill after that. Then the Sox hitters started to chip away and gain some runs and - again - Tito blew it by putting in that lousy Remlinger! Honestly, I don't know if the Sox could've pulled off a win without Remlinger blowing it, but it sure crushed the momentum.

Hmmm... "zelig" just discovered we have some new (?) channel - "Fox Sports News NY", channel 51 - on our Cox cable system which is carrying tonight's Mets game! We rarely get to see Mets ballgames. This could be a one-time thing, though. I'm never really sure exactly what channels we have on this cable system.. there are so many of them, and they seem to keep changing.

We will get to see a rare Yankee game tonight at 8pm on UPN Channel 9 (somewhere out of CT), then the Red Sox vs Angels game on NESN (as usual) at 10pm.

Best of luck to the Mets and Red Sox! :o)

Interesting stats, Ken. Zelig requested that I post this to you (he rarely posts on FR):

And when the Red Sox get home from their road trip, 24 of their last 36 games will be at Fenway. A much better ratio than the Yankees.

You may already know this: My husband was just reading that the Red Sox are either going to trade Bellhorn or he'll be designated for assignment.

FYI.....Mets are now in their last year on Cablevision.....which owns TWo sports local channels..MSG and Fox sports net..they put half the Mets hgames on one..the rest on the other..so they can justify the rates they charge..also simulcasting the Mets in Spanish on the other one..But thwe Mets paid $50 mill to buy out their contract..they start their own network next year...so maybe Cablevisio is tryig to drum up some interest...

Interesting. I wonder if we'll get that new Mets station on our system (up here in northern CT). We get NESN, but not YES. My mother - who never watches baseball - is about 25 miles south of here, and gets both YES and NESN on Cox Communications cable system, the same as we have, except for a few channels here and there.
