FR Baseball discussion thread: W/E/ 8/14

Posted on 08/15/2005 4:00:00 PM PDT by ken5050

Hi all..sorry for the delay..we had a violent T-storm pass through last night..lost cable and internet until a little while ago...Interesting week that just was..races are starting to shape up..some of the pretenders have given up the ghost, and we're gonna purge them from our lists. My Metsies are burnt toast..they had a very, very, VERY bad week..the collision probably keeps Beltran and Cameron out for the season..and yesterday, in a few pitches, Pedro went from a near no-no, to a big Oh NO!!..so..let's begin...

they could...

if Mike Lowell can keep hitting at a higher rate than he was, a healthy Carlos Delgado could REALLY make a difference...

but I don't everything will break out like that....

An A's/ Astros World Series isn't out of the question. If they were both wild-cards, that would be a big first...

Randy Winn hits for the cycle in his first four ABs in Cincinnati! More rare than a no-hitter, IIRC.

The Randy Winn trade was probably the only thing we've done right in the past year.

That's incorrect. The Giants and Angels were both Wild Card teams in the 2002 Series.

This bad joke called the NL West race is a perfect example of why, as long as divisional play exists, the wild card should exist. If the season ended today, and the wild card were not in existance, as many "purists" wish, the Padres, with a .496 winning percentage, would be in the playoffs, just because they are in a weak division, while the Astros, with a ,538 winning percentage, would not be in the palyoffs, just because they arbitrarily happened to be in the same division as a very good team.

If these "purists" want to keep the game the way it once was, why don't they focus on something that's seriously harmful to the game, like interleague play, not something that's just a break from tradition like the wild card.

Damn, Curt Schilling absolutely blew this game tonight against Detroit! He's looking pretty bad lately... his ERA is something like 6.69. I hope we don't have another Alan Embree on our hands.

Red Sox pitchers ain't what they used to be. I miss Pedro... :-(

Tigers were missing some best hitters tonight. Pudge is suspended and Rondell White is injured. Neither Bonderman or Maroth did any pitching tonight.

I was at 2 of the 3 Buccos/Astros games...of course the 2 that they lost. The Saturday one was awful, with Clemens giving up only 2 hits and no runs over 8 innings, with 9 Ks. Lidge gives up a homer right from the get-go in the 9th. He's been quite shakey lately. Also, the 'Stros had soemthing like 11 LOBsters or so--pitiful.

The Sunday game wasn't much better. No major league team, let alone a playoff contender, should get shut-out twice in a row. I was quite mad.

Of course, I completed my 3-games-in-3-days tour tonight, just in time to see a good old-fashioned spanking of the Cubbies. It was good to be a 'Stros fan tonight. Let's just hope they can keep it up.

I forgot to say in my excitement, the 'Stros still had 11 LOBsters tonight. And they still managed to score 12. Go figure. It's something they seriously need to work on--hitting in the clutch.

So to summarize..Both Sox in the playoffs, and you've got 4 teams..Yankees, A's, Angels, and Tribe fighting for two spots..Braves and Cards are locks..other two teams???

I'm not so sure the BoSox are a lock. Yanks are finally hot, only 3.5 behind. If Yanks take over first, then BoSox fall in the WC mix with the Angels and the A's. Tribe now 4.5 out of the WC; I don't include them. I agree that in the NL the Braves finally can be called a lock by now.

AL: ChiSox a lock; BoSox, Angels, A's, and Yanks in the mix--Yanks only 2 games out of WC.

NL: Cards and Braves are locks; Astros, Nats, Phils, Phish, Padres, and D'backs all within 3 games of a spot.
