Phantom skinny-dipper at the Spinnaker

Glimpses of possible nudity at lunch hour -- police have received calls of alarm.

Always on the lookout for sea lions, diners at the Spinnaker restaurant on the fashionable Sausalito waterfront have recently been catching alarming glimpses of a mysterious creature flapping around in the murky water.

A naked man has reportedly been swimming in full view of patrons enjoying lunch beside the restaurant's panoramic windows.

"The man apparently likes to swim in front of the Spinnaker restaurant and, in what you might call a strategic move, he likes to roll over in front of the guests," said City Manager Dana Whitson, repeating accounts she has heard. "The police have gotten phone calls."

The unsavory (by most accounts) sight has ruffled passing tourists and caused more than a few diners to nearly choke on their chowder while looking out over the San Francisco Bay.

Sausalito police received at least two reports in the past two weeks of a man swimming au naturel in the afternoon next to the restaurant. A bare- bottomed man was also spotted getting out of the water at the Schoonmaker Point Marina.

Restaurant employees and witnesses told police that the nude swims had been happening on a fairly regular basis, usually around 3 p.m., even before the latest sightings.

The police were concerned enough last week to hold stakeouts at the two sites, but nobody has yet been caught with his pants down.

Better yet, the restaurant could pass out paintball guns to the dining guests and anyone who paints the swimmers balls gets the meal for free.
