Soccer: Why is it hated?

Posted on 08/08/2005 11:22:35 AM PDT by onja

mods-If this isn't in the right place please move or cut it.

Why do most Americans hate soccer? It's not just that they don't like it. They are actively against it.

Soccer takes more skill and endurance than the other sports. In middle and high school you take a beating.(Elbowed, tripped, kicked, tackled- All done fairly or behind the ref's back and without body armor) There are many tactics decided by the players(unlike football and baseball). It's a sport many different people can do. Not just people who are huge or work out daily at the gym. Fast people, skilled people, strong people(fullbacks), tall people(goaly), small people, smart people. Footballers don't need much skill. Mainly strength. baseball doesn't need too much skill. Mainly the basics(throwing and catching) and strength. And, seriously, why does everyone think soccer players are gay, weak, etc? They aren't. In middle school half the team played another school sport. All of the highschoolers could easily have played school football or basketball. Out of the hundreds of players I've played I've never seen one who was even acted at all gay.

Cricket isn't bad unless you're completely clueless as to what is going on.

Cricket is kind of cool, but incredibly long

Think of a mix of Soccer and Rugby = Australian Rules Football.

Very fun game to watch. Almost as good as NFL Football (Go Broncos!)

My hubby would rather have a root canal than endure watching Cricket or soccer. Hehe! Thank God college football and the NFL will be starting soon.

Not a whole lot of skill.

Not true. You must not have played competitive or college ball.

I do want to know why you all think that.

My second reply......

If I could have my way, you and I would do the following:

1) Play soccer. Head butt the ball a few times, head butt each other a few times, you can trip me as I'm trying to kick the ball....we can run our a$$ off up and down the field a few times (a few is about all I could do)...ummmmm....then what?

2) Then, you and I strap ourselves into two cars.....you get the Chevy because I'm a huge Ford fan. These cars would be Nascar Nextel Cup series cars. 3,400 lbs. motivated by 850 horse power engines - to speeds in excess of 200 MPH.

I think our first track should be Daytona. Expect speeds of 205+ mph on the straight sections and 170 or so through the turns. A few friends will be joining us - 41 other cars to be exact. This means that you will have some company, behind you, in front of you and beside you - inches from you - while you are going through those turns.

At speed.

Then we need to go to Bristol, Tenn. Things slow way down. Where Daytona is 2.5 miles long, Bristol is only 1/2 mile long, hence an average speed of only 95 - 100 mph.

The only problem with Bristol is that our other 41 friends are there - wanting the same piece of track that you currently occupy - in the turns. "Trading paint" is a very real past time at Bristol.

So, after we do these two tracks, you and I sit down and compare notes - soccer VS. Nascar.

Who got scared when? Did your knuckles turn white trying to kick that ball into the goal? I'd bet they did at Daytona, turn 1, at 200 mph. Don't forget to breathe.

You may trip me while I'm trying to setup a kick, but I'm going to give you a "bump and run" at Bristol - at the entrance to a corner. You will now probably be sideways - headed for the wall - at speed.

The only question is: who got "Gobsmacked" where? Me playing soccer or you, being the middle car in a three-wide entrance into any turn at Daytona?

You asked why I don't care for soccer - and this time I did not say "gay" or "stupid".

Honest, just for your "life experience" memory bank, go to a Nascar race. Get down to the fence, next to the track, "One to Go" as the pack comes by in formation.

The Green flag waves - GO - and 43 pieces of heavey metal thunder absolutely blow your doors off as they accelerate to racing speed.

Your body is vibrating, literally. You hear nor feel anything but 850 horse power, multiplied by 43.

You smell burning rubber. You smell the very distinct odor of 107 octane racing fuel.

The God of Go Fast has spoken.

And soccer does........what now?

It's like baseball in this respect: If you don't know the game it appears to be boring. You don't see the intricacies and strategy that goes on.

That said, I enjoy baseball but I don't "get" soccer. I think it's boring.

Bzzt. the 21-14 football game has exactly twice as much scoring. If you'd have said 9-6 or 18-12 you'd have been correct.

(Rugby)This is another sport that would be enjoyed if people knew more about it.

Rugby is catching on out here. My old high school now has a team. I wish they had it when I was going there.

NFL and college ball are my 2 most watched sports, but I like soccer too. I played in elementary and should have played in high school but didn't, and have watched the last 3 World Cups. Some of the keywords here are really immature.

the 21-14 football game has exactly twice as much scoring

A PAT is not a scoring play, it's an afterthought. The clock doesn't run and there's over a 95% success rate. A PAT is only a notable event when it fails -- a blocked PAT is far more of a scoring play than a successful one is.

Soccer is stupid & gay. If you want an interesting sport, play lacrosse.

Football is better than soccer, there's nothin like the feelin you get when your strappin up those pads to go and participate in some physical contact! Soccer is like puttin on some shorts and playin catch in comparison. Baseball is better too,id rather play hotbox than kick a ball around anyday.

Boring? Ever watched a Baseball match without beer??
Or a football game? The ref throws the flag on the ground because the TV thinks it´s time for ads.

Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.

I didn't say no skill, just not a lot. If you can kick the ball hard and accuratly, and if you can run endlessly for an hour and a half, you will be good at soccer.
