At 400 pounds, Steve Vaught is taking the biggest leap of his life.

He's walking across the country to lose weight. Averaging 15 miles per day along Route 66, the self-titled "Fat Man Walking" has traveled 300 miles on foot -- and along the way, he's lost 50 pounds.

Check out Steve's website below.

I did when it was posted here a couple of weeks ago and also decided to donate $20 to the cause.

Man, he went through some heat in Arizona last week. My hats off to him. At least he went the mountain route, but now he's in Winslow which is still pretty hot too.

What an irresponsible idiot. There's nothing heroic about being lazy and undisciplined and then making your family suffer because of your poor lifestyle choices. Let me see if I got this right....He is going to leave his family for 6 months and in the process lose his car, his home and ruin his credit, so he can lose weight??? How self centered can a person get. How about we encourage him to see a head doctor to lose the fat in between his ears!

From the fat man walking website:

" ... So, after consulting the family and getting their blessing I have made the decision to stop this merry go round and dedicate myself to losing the extra weight. ...."

(/sarcasm)Also, you need to remember that he who dies with the most toys wins. (/sarcasm off)

As the daughter of an obese parent who is in complete denial of the problem, I would welcome and encourage ANY honest attempt on her part to lose weight, EVEN SOMETHING AS CRAZY AS THIS!!! I'd much rather deal with credit problems and loss of possessions with Mom's assistance rather than have all that stuff without her around.

From your statements, am I to conclude that you need a priority check?

He's going to come through this richer than he went into it in many varied ways. If he makes it the distance, that is. He'll get a book deal for sure, donations are already probably more than replacing his income. I think it will all bring this family much closer together than it's ever been, also.

I believe we all need a priority check if were going to lift this man up as some kind of hero. Again, if it wasn't for his undisciplined lifestyle, lack of motivation (lazy) to exercise, and inability to eat properly, his wife and 2 young children would not have to be put through this ridiculous escapade. I am all for losing weight and being health conscious. Come on, join a health club, walk in your neighborhood (his kids would love that and I imagine so would his wife), stop all fast food, EAT SMALLER PORTIONS!! Watch what you eat, it is YOUR hand putting it in YOUR mouth!!

In todays society it's all about me, what I want, how I want it, and when I want it. All I see is a man demonstrating a complete lack of good judgment. I want to lose weight and I want to lose it right now! It took 15 years of making the wrong choices to get where he is. Now all he cares about is losing it and losing it fast, no matter what the cost. Unbalanced, undisciplined and what a complete disregard to his family. Yeah, Yeah, Blessings smleshings...I couldn't disagree more with what this imbecile is doing!

Show me a man that puts his wife and children first. Show me a man that doesn't purposefully put his family in financial hardship. Show me a man that recognizes that he has a weight problem and changes his lifestyle to regain good health and fitness. That is a man I will encourage! Not one who is strolling across America, with utter disregard to anyone but himself!

note to wife: See honey, I can disagree without using any YOU statements! : )

It would be great for you to encourage your parent to do this. Are you a child that needs to worry about losing your home? Not being able to get school supplies? Where is the next meal coming from?

I'm not understanding why this guy can't do things the way others do. Why can't he change his lifestyle and include exercise while staying at home and providing for his family? How is he going to learn new eating habits from walking? It just doesn't make sense.
