Ken -- nah, Dent's homer was much more crushing than a Yankee loss under those circumstances would be. I really think now that both the Yanks and Sox will be back in the postseason as usual. BTW, I just saw that Palmeiro tested positive for steroids and has a 10 game suspension. He said he has no idea how the steroids got in there, but he accepts the suspension. Maybe already posted somewhere around here, just dropping in at lunch.
I'd like to think losing Tori Hunter cost us the season, but honestly, we've been sucking lately even with him. I'm happy Terry Ryan didn't try for some blockbuster trade. I'd rather miss the playoffs this year than sacrifice the future.
How about papelbons performance in his major league debut!! I was quite impressed!! 7 k's in 5 and a third.
Thanks for your prediction. Every time you declare the Yankees dead and buried, they go on a hot streak!
Someone is discounting the Cards rotation, I think. 4 of 5 isn't impossible, but highly improbable.
Essentially the Stro's have to pick up a game per week on the Cards to make it close. I'll take a look at their remaining strength of schedule this evening when I have some time.
I'll trade you my Barney Frank card. He's a catcher.
Well, you're welcome, ..(g) and you can expect a continuing series of similar projections..
Please post your comments....BTW..if you recall two weeks ago I posted a brilliant analysis I did, thowoing that the O's
had the big advantage in the Al EAST, especially because they had 6 more games to play with the Devil Rays..so, what did the O's do?....gawd...
You can trade Manny to the Indians, the Sox will need to pick up part of that untradeable contract, but you'll get lots of top flight prospects.
I can remember as a kid..pitching baseball cards in the schoolyard..and actually dog-earing a Mickey Mantle card..
Wow, thats worse than the Ozzie Smith rookie card I intialed so my sticky fingered brother wouldn't swipe it.
Ultimately, both the 'Stros and the Cards will end up in the playoffs. One as Wild Card "Champion" and the other as Central Division Champ. Obviously the Red Birds are in a much better position to win it outright. Still, I think if anyone can catch 'em it will be Houston--it all depends on whether the 'Stros continue to play at a level beyond that of mere mortals and if the injuries to the Cards starters will take its toll.
After David Ortiz' and John Oleruds back-to-back home runs (and roughly one hour before the trade deadline) Manny appeared in uniform in the BoSox dugout. Between 4:00 and 4:30pm, WEEI's Joe Castiglione & Jerry Trupiano announced that "Manny has requested a batting helmet". We could see from our left-field seats that Manny had a bat in his hands.
The chants of "We want Manny!" started well before the 8th inning... the chants actually originated with a bunch of kids in our left-field section, and we kept it going... NOT because we are Manny-worshippers (far from it), but because we wanted to see if he'd 'come out to play'.
Well, when Manny stepped up to the on-deck circle in the 8th, swinging the bat behind David Ortiz, you've never heard such a deafening ROAR from the crowd! I read that they were playing the theme from "Superman" for Mannys grand entrance, but I couldn't hear any music nor Joe & Jerry on my radio earpiece... the crowd noise drowned it all out. The rafters were literally shaking with cheers and applause. My husband remarked that he hadnt seen the atmosphere so electric at Fenway since the game we attended in 2003 when the Sox clinched the Wild Card it was incredible.
Manny - as pinch-hitter for Adam Stern - delivered his game-winning center field single and Curt Schilling pitched brilliantly in the 9th to seal the Red Sox win. So Mannygate concludes with a storybook ending.
Many people around us who had never been to Fenway before - and a young Irish couple who were attending their first-ever American baseball game - were positively gushing at how exciting it was at Fenway when the game ended. I didn't have the heart to tell them that not every game there is so exciting, but admittedly Red Sox Nation at Fenway is very unique... most will stay in the park right until the end of every game, whether the Red Sox are winning or losing, whether 9 or 19 innings. And they're QUITE vocal in how they feel about what's going on with the team... LOL.
I have to admit I'm glad the Red Sox are hanging onto Manny for the time being... I think his absence from the team would affect the team in a negative way. But I also think there's a strong possibility he'll be a Met in the off-season. Time will tell...
BTW, Matt Clement was there during pitching practice (there was no batting practice) and we saw him drive off in his SUV with his wife after the game. He looked just fine... not a scratch nor bruise on him, he was smiling away. Very lucky man...

It looks like the Stros have a little bit easier schedule. We will see how it pans out.
FWIW, about the only, ahem, Sawx "fan" who leaves the game early is Kerry...
Thanks for the report. Matt's wife is named Heather, I think, BTW.
