Viewpoint Media Ware: Asking for a Lawsuit [Vanity]
Self | 7/27/05 | Self

Posted on 07/27/2005 6:45:33 PM PDT by Fester Chugabrew

During the past two evenings a curious spectre has appeared in the lower right quandrant of my computer monitor. It is an appeal from "Viewpoint Media Ware" that demands I either a.) enable it, b.) visit their website, or c.) find out more about these people.

A "right click" on the window did not bring up any menu to disable it, close it, or ban it. Far be it from me to click on any executables without knowing where I'm headed. I could not close the window without shutting down altogether, which I did. After booting up again, I did a Google on this thing. It appears these folks have undertaken to install their software unawares on computers everywhere. Bastards.

I don't know about you, but I take umbrance to the implantation of executables on my computer without my knowledge or consent. Much as I hate frivolous lawsuits, methinks there is, or should be, a lawsuit brewing on this one. If so, I would be a willing participant in bringing these people a dose of reality.

One does not mess with other peoples private property in this manner without knowledge and consent of the property owner. At least that is how I feel. I am sure there are others more legally attuned as to how this might be addressed. For now I only wish to post a short spiel on FR regarding this thing, and thus allow a forum in which others might divulge similar experiences, vent their frustration, and perhaps band together in such a way as to send a message to the folks who think "Viewpoint Media Ware" should be stealthily introduced to every computer in the world.

You (most likely) got Viewpoint from installing AOL Messenger. I can help you with the fix if you'd like.

I have never installed AOL's crap on this computer. Is AOL tied in with these people?

Viewpoint came bundled with AOL Messenger at one point. It still might -- not sure.

Are you still having trouble getting rid of it? I'm happy to walk you through the removal procedure, if you'd like.

Thank you for the offer. If this proves to be a more persistent problem I may ask your help. There seems to be ample commentary on this situation online, along with suggestions as to how to remove it. What I'd like to see is a firm message sent to its creators and promoters. This is a no-no.

The AOL program itself is a frickin virus. Install that piece of dung and get ready for the problems. Avoid AOL like the plague it is.
But you yourself sound like you already know this. This post really goes out to A)anybody contemplating getting it. B) Anybody wondering whats wrong with thier machine that has AOL already installed on it.
