Bush's SCOTUS Pick: The Last Betrayal?
Posted on 07/19/2005 11:02:47 AM PDT by faithincowboys
If as it appears Bush will nominate a moderate named Edith Clement to the Court, will the Right bolt from the GOP in next years midterms? Bush, someone I have been a big fan of, is turning out to be a heck of a disappoinment. He hasn't controlled the borders and apparently only used the promise to appoint "strict constructionists" as a cynical ploy to get re-elected. Bush, like his father before him, is proving to be a huge demoralizer for the Right.

All in all, Bush sold out.I'm the FIRST one around here to give Bush s**t when he sells out -- and he has, often.
But you are wayyyyyyy jumping the gun.

Oh yeah that's right, she'll sell us out at a good clip. And your source for this opinion is?

I don't really have the time, just yet, to read the confirmation hearing transcript for Judge Clement.
Here's a question for you: is Edith Clement the most conservative jusge Bush could get confirmed?
Then where are you getting your so called info as to what she is?
The question is where has President Bush said he'd put the 'most conservative 'jusge' he could get confirmed' on the court? No where is my guess but you seem to think he did... Can you cite that?

Why hasn't he tried to save rural America from the scourge of meth, why hasn't he, like Reagan did, support legislation, like Jessica's Law, to create a tough national standard against those who commit crimes against children? Why hasn't he co-opted the good work that Mike Huckabee is doing against childhood obesity? You need a sedative.

There are plenty I wouldn't whine about... Michael Lutting, Edith Jones, Janice Brown, Emilio Garza, to name a few prominent candidates.
But any judge who thinks that Roe v. Wade was anything other than an unconstitutional exercise of raw judicial power is unacceptable to me.

That wasn't your understanding? Well I suspect a lot of people would have stayed home in November if there is some shifting standard that has apparently shifted to Souter in a dress who doesn't make the RINOS from Maine Nervous.

And you're indulging in name calling just cause you don't like the valid arguments that faithincowboys is raising. Based on Edith Clement's skewed (liberal) logic for declaring abortion to be the settled law, raises serious doubts in my mind as to the depth or strength of her "strict constructionist" leanings. Refer to my post #56 above. What "name calling"? Saying that the original poster is acting like an idiot is 100% correct in that all we have are unfounded (and factually incorrect) opinions being used to launch a pessimistic rant. Clement's so-called "skewed (liberal) logic for declaring abortion to be the settled law" is pretty much the exact same answer that Thomas and Scalia gave to the same question during their confirmations. Her answer was 100% correct, from the view of a federal appellate judge -- they have no authority to overrule the Supreme Court.

You're satisfied? Fine, but you changed, I didn't. You went soft.

So isn't past prologue?Hell no. If that was true, Rome would still rule the world -- because they did once.

souter Oh, wow. That is so convincing! I mean, that must have taken you hours of pouring through her background and decisions to come up with that detailed and well-reasoned response.

For the same reason that poor people in the inner city will never break the chains of crack cocaine, poor people in rural areas are never going to break the chains of methamphetamine.
My advice, work hard, save your money, so one day, you can move into a neighbor of higher income where there won't be addicts.

Thanks for raising the alarm and for putting up with the wrath of the Bush-bot neo-cons.
But don't worry too much. Edith is a sacrificial lamb, being offered up to be torn apart by the Senate lefties.
She couldn't possibly be the actual first choice from the short list.

See, you disagreed with the pessimist, therefore you are "soft". It's solid, well-reasoned repartee like this that makes this a lost cause, I suppose.
