The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think this lady would baby him more then I do. She asked if he liked carrots:)...I had to tell her, I have no clue, I don't give treats. She said she gives them all the time:)

I've got no clue what that is. I meant to ask but keep forgetting.

I'm going to have to look at it on the computer I guess. I can't see it that well on the WebTV. What picture are you looking at that you can see the bridle clearly?

On the very first picture I posted, I can bring it up really close on the email that it was attached on. It looks similar to a hackamore but looks like it works a little different.

Centaur I am so sorry to hear it.

He had a good long life. Sometimes, I have observed, when a horse is near the end they wander, walk, stray --- if they are able.

The two of you had a great life, you could not have asked for more.

Perhaps he was ready to go.

I had 2 horses that did that. Oddly enough, they both favored the same tree, standing under it all day long. These horses didn't live here at the same time so they weren't copying each other.

She's doing all right, no heat or swelling, just a great awful open cut. The vet is coming tomorrow. I took down hot water and soap and cleaned the lower leg off --- all that icky stuff that drips out of a wound. Then spray with hydrogen peroxide to foam away all debris.

Then sprayed that away with water from the hose.

Then furazone and hydrated lime.

You get it at about any farm store. I don't know if it is the same stuff for lawns or not --- probably. Maybe would use it to correct too-acid soil.

Remember it is not *lye* -- that is a caustic and burns. It is *lime*. And it is really handy to have around.

I got it - thanks. It's really fun to read all these stories. Even though I don't have a horse of my own and am not taking lessons now, I enjoy reading everyone's adventures. I hope to start lessons again soon.

OK, I see it now. I think it's a hackamore too. I think with the shape of it you'd get alot more action on the polls with it. Maybe, I don't know, it works to get the horses head down some, break at the poll????

It looks like the same sort of hackamore that my landlord had on Dan. Looks like when you pull back, you get an increase in nose-down pressure because of the curve and where the chain is.

OK good:). Glad to see you and jump in the discussions anytime. You don't have to own one to talk about them:)

I've seen those type of bits at the tack shop, but never really "LOOKED" at them. I'm not fond of hackamores.

I like them for trail. We're gonna get a better one for Cyn, she's going really well in the el-cheapo one we bought. I may switch Bay to one.

What don't you like about them?

Yeah, it would put more pressure on the nose too. Your right.

For discussion purposes:): that's one reason I don't care for most hacks. I've seen several horses that are ridden in them have permanet humped up noses, and permanent bare spots on their noses. I do like that one you use on Cyn because I don't think it would do that, the pressure is more spread out. But the type in that picture...Of course alot of it would depend on how much it is pulled on and how tight it is.

I would proably only use a hack if a horse had some type of mouth problem that the bit interfered with.

Hair, the pic you posted of the landlord's hackamore looks exactly like the one in my friend's pic.

I'm with Becky, I'm not fond of hackamores, either. If I'm having a problem using a bit because of teeth issues, I like to go to a sidepull. A mechanical hackamore has too much of a "nutcracker" action.

Oh, and I meant to ask. Why do you think you'd switch Bay to one. What is it about them you would prefer?

The one on Dan is more severe than we'd use on Cyn, because of the hard skinny nose piece. We'd get a nice wide one. I've not seen bare spots from hackamores, but I have from people who leave halters on.

I like them for trail because you can take a break and let them graze or drink without the bit interfering. And I like them for new riders, because they have a lot of stop that a beginner needs, without having a very severe mouthpiece in their mouth.

That he could eat in it and it'd be more comfortable all day. When I go out now with Bay's Kimberwick on, I have to clamp his mouth shut with the noseband to have any real leverage.
