This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have two lovebirds that I rescued about 7-8 yrs ago. They are in a 2'X 2'X 3' cage and are never out. First, my cats would eat them in a heartbeat, and secondly, they are monsters. They can fly because they have done that at the vet's office but they don't seem to choose to 99% of the time. They climb with their beak like parrots do.
That was really a nice thing for her to do, opening her facility for evacuees.
Here's a new project for you then - teach Sarah Lee to lead from both sides, and work on teaching her to go through a gate and then swing her rump around (so you can close the gate). A lot of our horses have to do that, since there is more than one in a paddock sometimes, and we only want one out. It's a good thing for her to learn under saddle too :)
That's how I lost my parakeet. It was really a bad scene... I was in college with two roomates in a house. The bird was always loose in the living room, either on a plant or on/in his cage that hung from the ceiling.
We had a stray kitty we were feeding outside, and another friend backed over it, and broke the cat's leg. We took kitty to the vet, who put a cast on the leg, and we had to keep him inside. We'll the cat was gimpy, the bird was pretty astute, so for awhile it was OK.... but when the cat got better, it stopped working. Too many members of the food chain in the house. :~\
One of mine used to be able to open his doors and I can't count the times I rescued him from a cat. We graduated to bread ties on every opening to the cage I have now which is a cockatiel cage. They aren't the brightest little critters on the planet.
I can't take the drama of any more wild kingdom and survival of the fittest in my house... it's bad enough watching Gidget eat mice in the barn.
I dont mind my dogs or cats eating mice, but I sure wish they wouldn't do the "crunch" bit when I am near! It freaks me out! LOL

I can already get her to do that:'). Okie too. I started teaching them in the stalls. When I put them to pasture they stand and lower their head to get the halter off. Then they stand until I walk out. Sometimes they get a treat sometimes not. I've been reading trying to open and close in the saddle. I'm ready to work on that. Anyway, I'm going to finish this tomorrow.
Which is why I can't get chickens either... or ducks... and I'd really like to have ducks.
Would Gidget eat the ducks?

I thought our Bassets would eat our chickens but they dont. : ) In a way I think it's becaue that would require far too much effort! LOL

Yeah - it'd be a bad scene to try to train her not to. Prolly Homer too. Bird dogs (even mixes) and farm birds are just never a good idea. When she's seen chickens before, she's gone absolutely quivering lunging whining crazy. ;~D
Is she the pretty blue heeler?
Then I think you wouldn't have had a problem at all today but sometimes lack of confidence telegraphs to the horse. I think you are capable of a lot more than you think :)
