The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I had a parrot but...someone stole him. He had a big cage but in the house I kept the door open and he liked to sit on top. He wouldn't have anything to do with anyone but me and liked to eat drumsticks:') Reba has the most awesome bird I've ever seen though. He makes the complete telephone cycle sound from dialing to answering. He also can whistle several songs. She'll have to be the one to tell you what he said to her the time she threw something at him though:')

Mine freaked when he couldn't get in his cage. That was home and safety. He would climb up and down with his beak and walk across the floor and crawl up a chair to the table or someones plate and get what he wanted and labor back to his cage.

I want to ask what yall would have done about a situation. I walked away from something today and am beating myself up about it. Sarah Lee in her new pasture. It's hotwired and the gate just two wires with insulated handles. It's maybe 5 feet wide. The owner wasn't home and I couldn't find the off switch. She has a pink gas golf like cart that she drives around. It was parked maybe 6 feet in front of the gate. Sarah Lee very skiddish around it. I make her check it out and she's getting better but just does not like it. I tried to move it but the battery dead. I guess that's why it got left where it was. I though and thought about how to do it but I was concerned that she would move over when she got close and touch the hot wire and if she backed out I would be ok but if she went forward I would have been between her and the cart. I left her and went and worked with Okie but she really wanted out. I needed her to come out straight and then turn right and walk out around the cart. I thought about leading her from the right so I could keep her over but that was putting me between her and the post. I feel like I should have at least tried but I just didn't know what to do and didn't want either one of us hurt but now I'm made at myself and thinking I should have just done it. I hate when I over think stuff:')

It seems like I have touched a nerve. So be it. Our horses have the freedom of running across 2 acre fields of pasture, our dogs are not in "kennels", they alternatly have freedom of our land here, and inbetween are in grass enclosures of 30x60 for their safety. A BIRD that is in a SMALL CAGE that cannot EVER fly because it has an owner that doesn't ALLOW it sickens me. Our horses can run, our dogs can run and play. A bird that is not allowed to use its wings to fly is wrong. If my opinion upsets you fine. I dont have a problem with that.

Your opinion doesn't upset me. We all have our own. These are just my opinions. IMO, a 2 acre field to a horse is about like a small cage to a bird, especially when they very seldom get to get out.

Eh I don't think you touched a nerve - Becky just has to be on all our cases for not riding enough - I just like keepin' horses whether I ride or not. Ours are all out tearin' around the pasture right now, they're likely to fall on their a$$es thundering into the paddock when it's as wet as it is, but they're just fun to have around.

Well my opinion was random, your FAO is aimed at me and vindictive. What makes you think our horses dont get to go out? Because we dont post pics? Get real! I'm outa here. Take me off the ping list and get a life.

I don't know Cindy.... I wish you had the confidence and control to lead that horse anywhere. If it's like I picture it from your description, where it's a little bit of a challenge to get your horse out, while keeping the other horses in, and get those handle gates closed and get her past a boogie at the same time, that's the kind of challenge that causes mistakes to happen, and a bunch of horses getting loose is worse than being conservative about it.

sorry Becky for getting so cheesed off. It's not my time of the month so I have no excuse! As for our horses, we do ride, but being a novice, i get enough stick from deaconjim without posting my mistakes. Also i like deaconjim to be on hand, not taking pics, in case i get nervous or something goes wrong. We also have a lot more land than just one 2 acre field.
I helped out in an animal rescue place as a teenager for a summer and saw little birds with their wings completly cut so that they couldnt fly from these tiny cages where they were packed in like rats. It has stayed with me, and i just cant bear to see any bird caged. We also had two cats come in from the same home, who were shaved and had tattoos.....horrendous.

"Yeah, I know but look at it again. There is a potential for 4 storms to merge and affect every one of us with maybe the exception being Hair. It's book/movie stuff:')"

ACK!!!! I am going to wind up moving back to volcano and earthquake country if this continues. But it's still "potential", so that is good. It's not "going to" or "there is no doubt".
