The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

...Patience works...

Yeah, I just wish I'd done it this way to start with. Just take the time that it takes so that it takes less time in the long run.

i've been thinking about that arena. You think it could be some kind of stratagey to get the neighbor to sell? Maybe the people with the arena want the land next door.

If I was the guy next to it, I'd sell, but they would pay dearly...which if they can build something like that they should be able to .

Maybe... we could put her on Biotin or something if needed, but I've seen Biotin make horses a little nutty.

Bob's a really interesting character, or he wouldn't be worth it.

I think the best thing your neighbor can hope for is for them to tear down the part that is too close to the property line. I mean is/was there any actual verbage in their deed that said you can't build within "X" feet of the property line? I don't think they can make them tear down the whole thing unless there were some kind of restrictive covenants on the land when they bought it. If there weren't, they can build anything on their own land that they want, as long as it's not a public health hazard. I'm not saying that they did the right thing, just that they may be within their legal rights.

The setback may be 10 or 15 feet.... which doesn't look like very much with a building that big.

Yeah, from the angle of Tuffy's picture, it looks like it's looming OVER the neighbor's barn. Hopefully the neighbor's house is on the other side of their property from the barn.

And it takes him forever to saddle his horse, like he's evaluating each piece of tack for the first time...
I'm guilty of that. I'm pretty darn fussy about the way things fit, and will take my time to make sure that they do. Drives my trainer crazy, but that's the way that I was taught. :-) Doesn't take me more than 20 minutes though, half hour tops :-p

I'd be totally pissed if I was that neighbor, but my question is, why didn'tthey speak up in the first place? If the fence wasn't there, I'd think that it was the same property.

Well what you said about taking horses out of their natural enviroment changes what natural is.
Not only that, but horses don't last very long in their natural enviroment, not only because of predators, but because of teeth and feet issues. They don't have floaters or farriers if something happens.

Isn't it cool?

If you visit the Isle of Skye you can rent these horses for trail rides. This fella must work with them and decided to take a break and the horse joined him.

I saw this picture and thought it was so neat!

I thought it was just the heel but I'm pretty sure it's the whole foot. Mandy won't be jumping her any higher than 18 inches so I think we're ok.

They've been fighting it from the get-go but those builders have been slapping that sucker up in a hurry. I think the law says that if they get far enough in the building then they can leave it. The mad neighbor has been calling the cops on them to get them to stop.

It's miserable hot. The low temp has been in the 80's so it's not even cooling off much at night.

I'll try to get some pics of us riding. I have a couple of pics of Mandy riding Tuffy, I can't remember if I posted them or not.

You know, I'm not sure when Tuffy was gelded. I'll dig out his papers and see if it says. Bud was gelded late, I'm guessing they were going to use him for breeding until they found out he was HYPP positive.

I think maybe the solution is to require the neighbor with the arena to plant mature trees along the fence line in a large enough quantity to hide the arena from the view of the house and barn.

Several hundred dollars per tree but cheaper than tearing down the arena. And if it's within the setback, they won't get it torn down anyway.
