The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Pinging everyone for gaited horse movies!

FrogInABlender, I was able to upload two of these videos, but my FTP is giving me problems so I didn't try more... I got the two best ones of the speed class uploaded, and I called it a success!

Below is FIAB's explanation of the speed class the videos are showing these are at a World Grand Championship gaited horse show, so these are the best of the best. They're great movies to show the unique gait of these horses... Important for everyone to notice, is that this is not a trot, and not a canter.

These are of the Speed Class. I love watching this class. If I ever had a “Horsey Fantasy”, it would be of riding one of these. The one titled “Img_006” is the longest one and is pretty good. The class is just starting and is at the “Show Rack” they crank it up to the “Fast Rack” later on. The others are pretty short, but are pretty good too. They give a pretty good idea of the energy in the arena. I was sitting right on the rail and it was like being at the Daytona 500 when they came pounding by. I had dirt in my hair and a smile on my face. I get goosebumps all over again just watching them. You’ll have to forgive the hokey organ music though. Post 006 if you can and any of the others too. I’d love for the gang to be able to see that gaited horses ain’t just for piddling around.
IMG_0006.ASF (7.8 MB)

This is a shorter one, smaller file of the same sort of class, for those of you unable to download the larger file above.
IMG_0013.ASF (944 KB)

See also beautiful pictures upthread from the horse show!

Yes, he still looks great.

I will never forget the time I rode him in a long column of horses. There was well over 100 horses and we were riding two horses side by side. It so happened that I was in the middle and you could see all the way to the front riders then turn around and look to the back. We were moving along at a good pace and most riders heads were bouncing up and down like a monkeys riding a football. I was enjoying a smooth ride on Tennessee and smoking a fine cigar. So I took the cigar out and in a rather loud voice says, Someday we will all be riding smooth gaited horses. There were a few muffled curses shouted my way, between bounces, of course. ..........

Please forgive the off topic post, but I just found this on the Neal Boortz website, and thought it might be of interest to many of you. This is a site that gives you the shortcuts for getting around the automated answering machines of many major companies so that you can speak to a live person. OK, maybe it's not off topic. This gets you off the phone faster so you have more time to ride : ' }

Very nice video, thanks for sharing. Beautiful horses. I always liked to see Rackers and Walkers do their "stuff".

Hair, there was a really nice black mule at the sale. Walk, trot, canter, neck reined, really well broke. 4 years old, and 16 hands. He no sale him at $1000. He was nice looking, but didn't have much hindquarters. Maybe, mules are like that.

We had to put face masks on both of ours. We are having a horrible time with knats. It's never happened before. They get in their eyes and mouth. This evening, 14 miles away in my back yard I had to go inside because they were getting on the baby.

My Mother has gnats terrible at her house. Always has. She lives in the woods and I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. They just swarm your face and eyes, get in your hair and just generally are a nuisance. I used to be allergic to them. Back before I got contacts, if I ever got one in my eye, it would swell shut in a matter of minutes and stay that way for a couple of days. I guess they must bounce off the contacts because they don't get in there any more. I don't think DEET works on them either, so I don't know what you can do other than stay inside. Maybe a fogger would work.

My gd fine. We just came in because they were getting on her but they are horrible at the stables. My instructor says she has never seen anything like it before.

Funny that you mentioned Rita. I was just wondering if this may be winds from NO blowing them in. Probably not related but they showed up shortly after Katrina.

Wow. What a show. If I ever dressed mine up, Sarah lee would have to be full skirts and bonnets. Okie, looks like an Indian horse to me. I see him with paint and feathers.

You are right, I can see them both in costume classes with riders dressed like that. Or perhaps a parade.

My entry in Arabian Native Costume class...

I can't defend the awful colors or the hat. The costume was borrowed ;~D

I think I got fourth in the class...

I can't imagine a situation where we'd dress ours up now.

We thought about a costume a few years ago for our town kid's pet parade... the theme was space... so I thought we could cover Bay in spray silver glitter, and aluminum foil and little antennae, and the kid too, and we could lead them.

Then I realized taking Bay in a parade, surrounded by a crowd and a bunch of kids covered with aluminum foil, actually sounded like a really bad idea. ;~D
