This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

ouch! I would be jumping in a warm bath to soak those aches away! : )
Maybe one day God will smile on me and I'll have a small place with enough room to have a couple Shires (I'd settle for any horse, of course).
Until then, I'll content myself with enjoying all of your horses and adventures!
And Beaker, I cannot imagine the pain you're feeling. Today was the first day I could walk normally since riding on Sunday. I've been doing stretches and mild aerobics so the next trail ride doesn't catch me so stiff!
I'll be OK. I think she was a little peeved at me for canceling last minute on her last week, so I guess that I deserve it.

I haven't even learned how to ride properly using my legs.
I can't imagine someone taking the stirrups from me. *horror*

Funniest thing, this happens quite frequently. I'll go for months and get no calls from people who want to ride, then bam....I had two calls today. One from a lady I don't even know really, only met her one time out riding with someone else. And a girl that was a neighbor right up the road, that was Jenny's age, and Jenny rode with all the time as a kid. The family moved away when the kids were in high school. We run into them once in a while in town. This girl went on to college to become a dentist, she has 11 months left of school. She called, just got a new horse and needs someone to ride with. Might be fun to catch up.

I'm doing trail rides for now.
Lessons are $40 for an hour. Trail rides are $38 for an hour and a half.
I'd rather Rebecca and I get comfortable with horses before getting into lessons.
And if the horse interest is just a flash in the pan for Rebecca, at least we've enjoyed it and I haven't spent a whole set of money on lessons she'll never use.
I will definitely sign up for lessons after a few more rides though!
That's Heather, and I haven't rode with her since last year.
She is getting to ride for the barn she was taking jumping lessons at.

That price is for each of us.
The trail ride was expensive for me. $81.00 since Rebecca needed a helmet and there's a $5 rental fee.
But I consider it an investment for myself and I have Rebecca's dad pay for her. But even if he doesn't, I'll find a way to make the money if she truly loves it.
Either that or I'll stop riding so she can.
I just had no idea what it cost to get lessons or ride.
I imagine the liability insurance cost is horrible for the barns that give lessons and rent horses. I know what it cost for the insurance for the Round Up Club we use to a part of, it's outrageous.

Oh definitely. Especially in lawsuit-happy South Florida!
I'd be spending more than that if I had to buy enough house and land to have a horse, never mind the cost of buying and keeping a horse properly.
The trail ride's a bargain when you look at it that way.
If you decide to go the lesson route, I don't know if it would be cost worthy to look into. But you might be able to lease a horse from the barn. I don't know how leases work, but if it's cost effective, it would give her a chance to ride other then during lessons, which in my opinion is a good thing.
But to be honest, I don't have a clue how leases work.

Leases are pretty cost effective. Mine covered board, feed, and I had to pay my half in foot and vet bills. And the way that I saw it, I was saving myself $30.00 every time I got on a horse. With the amount that I rode then, it paid for itself in no time.
$38 dollars for an hour is nice! My trainer does a "package deal" where she offers four lessons and eight pratice rides, or four lessons seven pratice rides and a trail ride for a discount. I'm going to take her up on it, because I really want to ride more.
That's what I was wondering about. How much time you can spend on one other then your lesson.
A barn i use to work for leased one horse to more then one leasee. I just wondered how that would work???
I would probably only be cost effective if you did ride more often.

That sounds like a good deal. do you have to schedule your non-lesson rides so you don't run into someone else wanting to use the same horse? do you always get the same horse, or is it what ever is available?
RM, if you decide to do this on a regular basis, you might just go to the barn owners and work out some kind of deal. I'll bet thru the winter, they would work with you. Or whatever is the off season there. do you have winters:)?

My understanding is that they are costly ($300+/month.)
You have to pay for food and board and prices for that go up depending on what type of horse and how much pasture time you want them to have.
Oh, it must differ from barn to barn.
