This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hopefully, we'll find out more on Tuesday and I'll keep everyone posted.
Congrats to your friends, both those babies looked like winners.
I think we all occassionally miss the trees and ferns and lots of green, doubt many of us would trade our mountains and lack of humidity to have them full time though. Nevada sort of grows on you :)
Thanks - all I do is handle the paper work (and yell someone grab his rope when he came over the stall door).
Rolling eyes. Such a drama queen.
He went over his stall door? LOL What happened?
I think you did great. I love the basket:)

For some reason all the horses were nervous Saturday, not just ours. Horses rearing up, whinnying, banging stall doors. I was standing at Friday's stall door trying to keep her calm, my great niece was standing at Tuffy's door talking to him and Bob and Tracey took Quest into the trailer to change halters (he had already thrown a fit in the stall and wouldn't let anyone work with him in there so we had brought him out and just tied him to the trailer. Anyway, when Quest went into the trailer, Friday threw a fit and as I was closing the top of her stall door to keep her from trying to come over, Tuffy just reared up and over the door - hung up his back legs but then pulled them over. Good old Prez was just standing in his stall but when led up to the gate for his class, reared up himself.

You look really relaxed and natural riding english.
The main thing that's different between western and english riding, and something I have a major problem with, is with english riding you should be able to draw a straight line down from your shoulder to your hip to your heel. When you first start out, it feels like you are riding with your feet behind you but it gets easier as you go. I still suck at it.
Actually, this is the same seat that the western pleasure riders should have.
AAM: I did the steps of mounting you said from the flat ground and I can do it:), thanks. The saddle didn't move at all.
This picture is before we took out the gullet that the saddle came with, there is 2 screws you take out and a velcro piece you take off to get to this point.
Take out the black bar, there are two screws on each end of it:
Then you slide in the appropriate size, they are color coded.

Well it looks like I suck at it too:) I am more comfortable with my feet out a bit.
Becky
The saddle looks good on both of you - you look like you are very comfortable in it. Does it feel secure?
I feel more stable with my feet more out in front of me.
And you don't suck at it, you're just learning!
Wow, that's nifty! You can use the same saddle for several different horses just by changing the gullet?
That is really cool that you can change it to fit the horse. I wonder if there are saddle makers that make western saddles like that?
There are 6 different sizes.
Wintec makes a western saddle I don't know if they come with a changeable gullet or not. Do western saddles have gullets?

JP loves tractors, I mean really likes them. I've been considering getting one of the battery operated ones, but have hesitated because I think kids should have to pedal their riding toys:). This one pedals:). It was the only one I've seen like that, and WalMart only had this one. It was so funny, when I was pushing thru checkout and out of the store, little boys were coming over a drooling on it:), even some daddies had to stop and looke:)
Of course when JP got here today, he is sick and running a fever, but he's really looking at it as he sits on Moms lap. I figure this will make it thru several grandkids.
Becky
It feels very secure. I'm not going to sign off on that it is as secure as a western till I've ridden it thru a spook:). But I don't think it's going to be a problem
