The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I guarantee a full moon makes people act nutty. I used to be a directory assistance operator, for nearly 10 years. I would handle over a 1000 calls a day and it was very easy to tell when there was a full moon.

Well, I decided to put Bud back with the other horses and try to work with him on his problem of running through the gate at feeding time. Night before last, I put a halter on him before I opened the gate in order to lead him up quietly. I opened the gate and he still took off like a rocket, jerked the lead rope out of my hands, and ran off bucking. Soooo, I caught him, didn't let him eat, put him in the round pen and made him do about 100 laps then took him back out to pasture. Last night, he quietly trotted in by himself and went straight to his stall.

He's probably the smartest horse I have, which isn't saying much, but he does catch on quickly. Those laps in the round pen were very hard on him, he hasn't had any regular exercise in years.

It's just amazing that he caught on so quick as to WHY he had to do the laps. Maybe he was still tired??? I'm interested if the lesson sticks, let us know.

He might have been sore from all those laps. Every time he runs in like that I'm going to make him do it. He'll eventually catch on.

Ok, I'm still doing some reasearch on English and Western Saddles. If you all are tired of the subject let me know:)

My question now is, and I'm not sure how to phrase it, but it seems I've run into alot of people who advocate English saddles, BUT switch to Western for more security when trail riding????? Not just here either but people I've talked to lately. I know Hair, Frog, and AAM ride English all the time, so they must feel they have plenty of saddle. Estogen I don't know what type of saddle you use.

Ecurbh, Beaker, Cindy and maybe tuffy???, you've used both, do you feel more secure in the western? I know tuffy you want your daughter to use a western for trails for more security. Ecurbh, why did you go western?

The other day when I rode with Miranda thru the cows, and when the deer jumped up and he spooked, is when I got to thinking about this question. I'm sure it's going to boil down to preference, and the confidence I have in my own riding. I never hold the horn in those situations, when he spooked I didn't grab it, IMO, grabbing the horn is not going to save you. The Windtec I sat in on the saddle stand felt like I had plenty of saddle under me, and I really liked the feel of the knee rolls, I thought at the time they would help even more then the swells of a western saddle. I could tell I wouldn't feel as secure in some of the other types I sat in, narrower, and not as much knee rolls.

So I guess my question is DO western saddles really give more security, in your opinion, or could that be a mind thing just because they are bigger and have a horn?? LOL, am I worrying this thing to death:)? I just don't want to spend $500 and regret it. Even if I would get one before the CTR, I think I would do it in a western. I'd give myself alot of time in an English before I'd compete in it.

"I am just surprised it only took once:)"

It probably will take more. Even if he did catch on that quickly, he's still gonna test me.

EEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Why is it that sex offenders are always so slimey looking? Have you ever seen one that was just really a hunk:)? I know this is not a laughing matter, but seriously, I wonder why that is? Reality, lot of women will probably just lay down for a hunk, doesn't have to be a fight....and that's really sad.

Do you know anyone you could borrow an english saddle from for a little while?

I do feel more secure in a western saddle and I feel like they are more comfortable on a long trail ride. The bigger seat distributes your weight over a larger area.

My daughter prefers her english saddle over western any day. I think it's just what you get used to.

Miranda had one that she would have let me try, but it was more the type that was narrow and very flat seat, not much cantle. I'm afraid it wouldn't give me a true feel compared to the one I'm looking at.

I think the bigger seat does make a difference. That was one of the first things I noticed about the Wintec I sat in, I could really tell, other then not having the swells and horn in front of me, that I didn't have as much saddle under me. It felt like plenty. What kind of English saddle do you have?

My english saddle is an all purpose one that I had made for Bud. Mandy uses it now for Winnie. There is a saddler here nearby that measures your horse and sends the measurements to this company in England. They make the saddle, send it back then the saddler brings it out and fits it to the horse, stuffing the panels.

I meant to point out that one of the things that makes me feel more secure in an english saddle are the knee rolls. I like big knee rolls.

And the saddle that I had made for Bud fits him like a glove. It doesn't even need a pad it's such a perfect fit.
