Many thanks to Constitution Day for emailing the link. These mysterious doors are tiny; they are right out near the surface of the pyramid; they have absolutely nothing to do with anything of much importance. Zahi's just drummin' up business. Egypt can't pay for more flight lessons for its nationals and ammo for things like the Luxor massacre without those tourist dollars pouring in.

The small shafts that go from the king's tomb to the outside are said to be sighting shafts for some kind of astronomical events. However, the shafts are not straight and there is no view to the outside through them.

That was my impression as well.
Thanks much for posting it; I didn't have time to do so last night!

Hawass is right. It is important is to show the adventure of archelogy so people will support it and then value the findings.

Campbell's Tomb on the Giza plateau, sometimes attributed to the time of Khufu:

Campbells Tomb
Together with Col. Howard Vyse and Giovanni Caviglia, Campbell collaborated on excavations in the vicinity of the pyramids at Giza in 1837. Amongst their discoveries was a shaft tomb of the 26th Dynasty (650-525 BC) now known as 'Campbell's tomb'. 1

The very remarkable tomb known as Campbell's tomb, requires some notice here, as it has been associated with the name of Khufu by some writers. For a detailed plan and measurements reference should be made to Col. Vyse's volumes; but we may state the general form of it as a large square pit in the [p. 139] rock, 26 by 30 feet, and 53 feet deep; outside this there is a trench, running all round it at 9 to 22 feet distant; this is 5 feet wide and 73 feet deep. Bars of rock are left at intervals across this trench. Altogether about 10,000 tons of limestone have been excavated here. 2
