The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ok, so I get out of bed at 0300 this morning to shower up and hit the road. I get to the lobby and try to check out and no "dude" at the desk. I say "dude" because he is a shining example of youts produced by public schools. Insolent, can't be bothered - hard to tell if he's really stupid or just ignoring you with a half-lidded expression. Anyhoo, he's awol. I ring the bell, I sing-song "good morning?" over the counter. I pace back and forth. I take my bags to the car. I wander around the lobby and ring the bell some more. 15 minutes go by. Then I see the security camera. So I start talking to it - since it was the only employee on duty. I smile and wave like the goofball that I am.

Just then the elevator rings and Dhuuuuuuude steps out. He's rumpled and sleepy. His hair is a mess and his shirt is untucked. So I lay some of my obscene morning perkiness (it's a blessing and a curse) on him. "Oh, Hi! I'm so glad you're here. I needed to check out about 15 mintues ago. Running late! Need a receipt!"

"Oh. I, like, didn't know you made an appointment to check out."

"Well, usually, when I'm standing at the desk I'm ready to check out." Saccharin smile. I get my receipt and toodle-doo him goodbye.

Getting to the airport is a piece-o-cake. I even got there an hour and a half before my flight. No problems with my reservation, short line for security. Got some breakfast, tore into a new book, and all was well.

The plane ride was interesting. I sat next to another Dhuuuuuuude who looked like he was trying to get to a Dead concert but got really lost. Dude. He didn't even know his alphabet and a nice asian businessman-type had to excitedly point out that he had seat "D" and Dhuuuuuuuude had to sit in "E". "Oh, like, ok." Well Dhuuuuude's legs were, like, omigawsh, 9 feet long and he had to sit spread-eagle like guys do. So I was smushed up against the window and Asian Guy had to lean out into the aisle. Lookout! Here comes the cart!

Elsewhere in the plane it was "My Big Fat Greek Vacation." There was a huge Greek family running around. They were jolly and sweet, but there were serious language issues that caused a bit of mischief. The grandfatherly character apparently didn't speak a bit of English and naturally didn't understand any of the squawking over the PA about using the lavaratory in your ticketed cabin, not congregating in the aisles, not obeying the seat belt signs, etc, etc, etc. So the grandkids took it upon themselves to run up and down the aisles and fetch grandpa and explain, loudly, in Greek, what the fuss was all about. The other half of Greece met them at the airport and there was much European-style-kissy-kissy greeting.

So I'm tired, and hungry, and in pain from being crunched up against the window when I get to baggage claim. And you guessed it - no bag. Argh! They lost it in Dallas, or at least, that's the last place it was seen. I'm worried that because it's the bag I take to White Sands it may have piqued security's interest. I'm also worried because it was stuffed full (they sent me home with huge stacks of hardcopies of the power point slides) and may have come open. I'm having horror/anxiety at the idea of my dirty laundry spilling out. Eeek. But I'm most worried about the shoes. There were some to-die-for shoes in that bag, shoes that make me feel like a million bucks. I don't have many shoes like that. I want them back. Oh and my toothbrush. Grrr.

But on the bright side. My sweet hubby just ordered dinner. Thank goodness for delivery!

Glad you're back, LF!

And that sounds like quite the exhausting plane trip. How long until the next one?

Next week is Northern VA - I'll drive for that one. Then it's back to NM the week following. *sigh* I'm homesick just thinking about it.

Too bad, all these trips to NM and none to Denver!

I had a brainstorm about doing a travelogue/memoir/Bridget Jones' Diary type book - little vinettes from the airport. There are so *many* interesting people in the airport. I'm always highly entertained.

There was one lady who struck me as a real frigid piece of work. She sat with her nose in the air and a really pruney expression on her face. She was wearing and orange sweater twinset and grey slacks. She thought she was really, really high class. Chanel bag, big diamonds on her fingers.

Then I see her shoes. They're the craziest, funkiest orange mules in a yellow-orange-brown 70's retro pattern. Too funny!

She sat in 1st class, of course.

Yikes! I'm surprised things like that are even made!

Oh yes, and folks pay big bucks for them. I only pay big bucks for wardrobe-friendly shoes, and even then I'm cheap.

But these are fun:

You wouldn't catch me in them, but they're fun.

Those may actually qualify as "scary beyond all reason".
