The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Evening!

Here for a bit, then venturing out into the wilds of Fort Collins night life. Kinda. Going to that bluegrass jam.

It's gonna make me homesick for the one back home (where they played at sane speeds and were a bit more low key and where there were more mandolinists so I could hide), but I guess ya gotta start somewhere.

Of course it's good for you!

But it is ~so~ tempting to sit home, read a book and munch on chocolate. :-D

Tell me about it.

Especially as I sound wayyyy better at home. Funny how that works.

Come on. You just believe you sound better because you aren't so worried about what other people think.

Relax, have fun and be yourself, chica. We love ya, so why shouldn't everyone else? ;-)

Heh...because unlike the jam back home, this one is primarily frequented by young guitar slinger guys who are there primarily to show off, and they have vey little patience with a displaced Celtic musician who's not young, not cute, and doesn't know the tunes. ;-) Not that anyone's said anything. And at least the two banjo players and one mandolinist who were there last time were kind and helpful when I wasn't catching the odder chord progressions.

But when I know I'm better than I'm being, it just makes me mad at the world. And when I don't take chances for fear of falling on my face, musically speaking (which is the nature of jams, and why I rarely improvise on tunes I don't know well), I get mad at myself for my cowardice.

Much more info than you wanted, I'm sure!

*sigh* Though on the bright side, I suppose the young guitar slingers are easier to deal with than the nearly-fifty-year-old bitter divorced guys that occasionally hit on me at the last jam.

I'm so picky.

Girl, you need to realize that you ~are~ young, cute and know some pretty kickass tunes yourself.

If I had half your talent, I'd be doing a little showing off myself! Teach them gee-tahr slingers a thing or too. *wink*

I shouldn't hang out on single wimmin threads. They get me down for the rest of the day. I feel like I should be put out to pasture.

I just wish there was a Celtic session nearby. I'd at least be able to play on some stuff there.

Bluegrass...I'm a beginner still, really. And I know it's my own fault. I just find Celtic stuff more fun to play. And my improvisational skills stink. A big part of bluegrass is improvising a solo, even if you've never heard the song or tune before. I just can't do that!

Also, everyone takes turns playing solos, whereas in Celtic, the melody instruments all play together, and sticking with the basic tune is the norm. And melody instruments don't play chords...so I'm not very good at that, either.

They played slower and did more mixed stuff at the "bluegrass" jam back home - more old country and even some of our Celtic tunes. They also did less complicated stuff. And there was just a different atmosphere...this one often feels like a competition.

Of course, I'm also judging it through serious homesickness. ;-)

Kinda like when I lurk in the divorced folks/child-support threads.

Icky.

I stay here except for silent_jonny's reality show threads and Hair's Saddle Club thread.

Oh yeah, I do read the news once in a while. *grin*
