The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Or even some sharp steel spikes. :-/

My neighbor is in a wheelchair. He saw me as I was getting into my car and I told him a synopsis of my morning.

He laughed and said that the foot rests on his wheelchair were sharp and that he's hit rude folks from behind so that the foot rest would cut into the backs of their ankles.

If they won't even let a person in a wheelchair though, how can I expect them to let me through with a stroller? Sheesh.

Evil guy! LOL!!

Arm Becky with a very sharp umbrella. It'll keep of rain or sun, as well as letting her innocently poke passersby.

Heh...spikes sounds more interesting. Ben-Hur style "chariot" racing...

I actually think more, shorter breaks would be better than a long summer break. I think the only reason the summer break became tradition was because kids were needed for harvest on the farm. Not many can claim that now.

I was shocked when I saw the amount of homework Rebecca brought home as a kindergartener. I remember kindergarten being mostly about cut and paste, coloring and crafts - with some numbers and letters thrown in.

Becky was having to do "book reports" in kinder. I would read her a story, then she had to write the title and author, draw a picture describing a scene from the story and two sentences about the picture.

Crazy!

Last year, she had no less than 30 minutes of homework a night. As a first grader!

I shudder to think how much she'll be bringing home this year. It cuts into our evenings together, which is the only time I have with my kids.

It seems like all we do during the school year is homework, dinner, bath and bed. It sucks.

But I'm calling the ranch today to make our appointment for this weekend's trail ride. :-D

I agree with you on homework. I didn't have regular home work until high school. That's gotten out of control. MORE is not necessarily better.

School will now finish at the end of May and start back up first week of August.

Just got an email from my dad, and he talked about having to start this week too... but I'm not sure if students were starting this week or if this is the one-week prep time they get. But they do have a week vacation in October now. So there's that.

Heck at least the schools are air conditioned down there... AZ and FLA would be better off if they went to school all summer and took time off in the winter :~D

You know, there is no reason elementary school kids should have regular homework. Don't they have all day in class to do their learning? And then they get sent home? Sounds to me like the teacher's having you do her job for her in what should be family time.

My sibs and I never took more than three hours (when we applied ourselves) on school before high school. Granted, there's a lot of wasted time in a school setting that homeschoolers don't have to worry about, but just what are they doing with the kids all day?

I forgot my coffee again this morning.

I do have a can of soda with me. So there's that.

It's downright cruel that we should be required to remember coffee before *having* coffee.

Not to mention having to make it while caffeine impaired.

I haven't heard about a week off in October - and it isn't on the calendar. :-(

Becky's going to skip class on the 8th and 9th of September anyway. We're going to Busch Gardens for her birthday present.

I called the ranch. We're set to ride out at 10:15am Saturday morning.

I don't have a problem with ~some~ homework. I see it as a way for the parents to know what their child is being taught and making sure they "get it".

Some kids may not understand the lesson in the way the teacher is explaining it, but maybe mom or dad can explain it in a way that their kids can understand.

But I've always viewed homework as a refresher course for the day. IMHO, it should be about short exercises and light reading to make sure the student grasps the lesson.

And it shouldn't take more than 5 or 10 mintes to go over at home.

And it shouldn't be every day. Not at that age.

I'd prefer if they just gave us a brief weekly review on Fridays that we could go over together on the weekends.

I can see that a little helps the parents to be involved in what they're up to. But whatever they're doing, and I've only heard rumblings about it from other parents, the volume of homework seems to be out of hand.

The last time I looked, before I handing the new support group egroup over to the new owner, about a half-dozen ladies from the BA CHEF egroup had signed up. Only one lady has signed off of the old egroup.

I know people are still trying to decide, but I wish those that know they are not going to be part of BA CHEF would go ahead and sign off the BA CHEF egroup. I mean, like the leaders, you know? The ones that split the group. Like Celeste and a couple of the other leaders.

They're not part of the CHEF any more and I feel like they're "spying". The minute I decided to not join their group, I turned their egroup over to someone else and left it completely.

I could boot them out, but I hate to do that...
