The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Don't want multiple homes. Wouldn't mind having friends in interesting places, though...people to visit once in awhile.

I like Byron. And Shakespeare.

No need to qualify. "Wondering" is open-ended and entirely different than "Regret." The teacher went off for what seemed like an eternity going on and on about bad decisions and hating yourself. He was convinced that the speaker in the poem was not happy with his decisions. It was over the top. I may still have my notes from that class in the cellar in AZ.

"Wondering" is a good interpretation.

You're a homebody, and that's good. I want to see lots of the world... in between everything else I want to do. Would rather like to live somewhere interesting for a year or so. Might make me appreciate this country more.

Shakespeare would be better if it were translated into English ;~D

Liebst du um Schönheit,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe die Sonne,
Sie trägt ein gold'nes Haar!

Liebst du um Jugend,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe der Frühling,
Der jung ist jedes Jahr!

Liebst du um Schätze,
O nicht mich liebe.
Liebe die Meerfrau,
Sie hat viel Perlen klar.

Liebst du um Liebe,
O ja, mich liebe!
Liebe mich immer,
Dich lieb' ich immerdar.

Publishing (something other than technical papers) is definately on the list. Being a hermit in the mountains of NM is also on the list.

I don't mind travel. It's not that. It's just that having travel be something that's special...kind of a one-time deal...that makes it more meaningful, in my opinion. Just like I'd never *really* want to be able to afford whatever I want the instant I want it.

Guess I'm odd that way.

It's English... helps if you're fluent in English English, of course, but it's entirely understandable and the really weird words are footnoted.

I love that song... and it fits the theme of the thread today!

Just the other night a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn’t help but think of the way things used to be.

She was the one that I’d wanted for all times
And each night I’d spend prayin’ that God would make her mine
And if he’d only grant me this wish I wished back then
I’d never ask for anything again.

(chorus)
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you’re talkin’ to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn’t answer doesn’t mean he don’t care
Some of god’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.

She wasn’t quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn’t much we could recall
I guess the lord knows what he’s doin’ after all.

And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thankedd the good lord
For the gifts in my life.

*chorus*
Some of god’s greatest gifts are all too often unanswered...
Some of god’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

I wish I had a "cult thing" in my past. It really sounds very exciting. ;~D

It was a church cult. There were no orgies or drugs involved...at least at my level.

In later years, I've wondered about the leadership.

*sniff*blubber*

Shame Garth has faded from the limelight. He chose some excellent songs to sing.

See, I don't think "going to Hawaii" is intrinsically any more special than "going for a hike". Different, maybe, but I try hard to find joy and wonder in everything. Even a bus ride. Although that's harder.

So I don't need to go somewhere different just because it's special, but at the same time I think even if I did visit lots of cool places, the novelty wouldn't wear off.

I was never in a cult, but I grew up under a rock. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
