The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, Steve forgot his keys at work yesterday and couldn't get in his office to work on his paper. A bummer for him, but we were all delighted...he had to come home!

So we had breakfast and then I went and took the pool cover off and then I noticed that Isabelle was in the nest box and it reminded me to check for eggs.

When I got out there, I found that Rosabelle had passed on to her reward.

I ran in and got Steve and he ran out with me. I started calling the others and made note of all of them...except Roy.

I found Roy, passed away, in the little shed where their feed is kept.

"Ol' Roy", we called her.

I brought them out and laid them under the shade tree and then we got the boys. They came out and petted them and we talked about how chickens don't live long and this 100+ weather was likely too much for them. Then we talked about memories, mostly of Roy because they didn't get too attached to Rosabelle.

Then we buried them under the shrub where they most liked to hang out.

We're rather subdued at our house today.

Oh dear... Both on the same day?

Had you seen any signs that they were getting to the end? You don't wonder if you got some bad feed or something?

I did wonder about the feed...it was the last of their feed. But they've never had any trouble before with the last bit of feed. Nonetheless, I took it away and covered up with a board the parts they'd scratched out onto the ground. I also sanitized their waterer...

But I really think it was the heat. It was 102 here yesterday.

Isabelle and Benny are fighting over the nest box and Puffy (who has a permanent reprieve now from the chop) and Jar Jar are milling around in the shade by the house.

Do they like or hate water? If you set a sprinkler out would they cool off and splash in it like our birds do when it's hot?

oh - and I'm sure Puffy is relieved ;~D

I guess we won't have to launch "SavePuffy.org"

They like cool sand...which they have access to in their coop and under their shrub. That's where Puffy and Jar Jar are now.

I'm keeping a sharp eye on them. But I don't know if there is anything I could do and really...they lived a lot longer than I thought they would originally. I kinda got to thinking they wouldn't ever die!

There's a picture of Roy on your profile, but I don't remember what Rosabelle looked like... was she of the same kind as Roy? the second set of chicks you bought?

Here I am with Rosabelle...she was one of the Americaunas I got Easter before last for my neices.

She laid light olive green eggs. She was pretty young, and very delicate.

Are you guys on cable or DSL?

Here's the link to the full sized file...

I didn't download the program you recommended (yet) it asked for registration for the free trial and it intimidated me. (heh) Not sure I'd figure out how to work it anyhow...

07-22-05 027.avi

Do you have time to see if you can save it down to a reasonable size? If you have high speed to download it in the first place, of course. If it's easy to do... and email to me maybe?

Just say no if it's hard... this dumb accidental video is not worth a lot of trouble. What I should do sometime is actually record ~good~ video.

So these two are actually younger than the original Buff Orps you have? Are you going to get new chicks right away?

Yes, I'm very suprised. Rosabelle was the smallest of them all. The buff Orpies are very heat intolerant.

Aww...that's too bad! Especially two at once. Even if Rosabelle wasn't as much of a pet.

Matthew was pretty upset at first but he's ok if we don't talk about it...Josh too. Of all the chickens, Roy and Benny are most like real pets.

'Member Roy had quit laying but she was "safe" from the chop because she was a real pet?

She was our first layer too.

She was a real good pet, even for just a chicken. She just let Matthew haul her all over the place without a fight.
