My husband bought me a dachshund last year for my birthday. When we brought him home (at the time)we lived in a very rural, VERY quiet neighborhood. We are now living in Columbus on a very busy side of town. Hence the increase in traffic, noise, people, and everything else that goes along with it. Well our dog barks for hours at the smallest noise. I hate trash day....when the trash truck shows up our dog is in full blown hysterics. What can I do about this? We have tried training (it didnt work), taking him outside when the the loud noises occur (doesnt work), and making sure he has everything he needs in terms of going outside and so forth. Scolding him basically sends him under the nearest couch to bark. The sound of the phone ringing sends him into barking fits. Mind you this is a dog that has grown up with a very noisy and active toddler who drags him around for almost everything. He is great with kids and is very protective of our daughter. Plus there are nights when we (daughter and myself) are alone when my husband has to go into work. So I dont want a mute dog. I would just like to find a middle ground with our dog. Any ideas?
It must be a little dog thing. My poodle does the same. Dachs were bred to be hunting dogs so maybe that's why.

My mother has a very barky dog (miniature pinscher) who never responded to training either. The only thing that works is one of those collars which zaps the dog when she starts barking. The dog hates it, and now if she won't stop barking for some reason, my mother only has to show her the collar and threaten to put it on to get Miss Yappy to be quiet.
I thought this would be impossible but I saw a TV show where they tackled a barker. They would use noise or some stimulus to trigger the bark, the dog would be set off but eventually would stop. They rewarded the dog when he stopped barking and eventually he could be exposed to the stimulus and would not bark. Of course this got a reward. It took lots of reward treats to get to this point. But you should give it a try.

The tips we got through training were expose him to the noise when it happened, expose him to noises in general when he started to bark. Same concept I suppose. It never did anything but make our dog foam at the mouth to get to the trash truck. LOL. Thanks for the advice. Maybe we will try something else in terms of stimulus and see what happens after that.

2 words- DUCT TAPE!
Now, you don't want to discourage him if someone is at the door or breaking in, so you must use it sparingly. Try it, and I think you'll find he'll get the message.... Just a suggestion and hope it doesn't turn him into a "Natural Born Killer"... LOL.

If the barking habit has gone on for quite a while, an anti-bark collar is the best answer. Oh, and barking is one of the hardest habits to break. Good luck.

Just kidding. Maybe the dog just needs time to adjust. Have you been there long? I would consult your vet and ask them for suggestions. There must be something you can do in the way of training that they know of.
