Actually I dont think it would be a deterrent. It would just get quite a few Mexicans killed and their families along with them.
Sealing a border that large is not going to fix it. The illegals will ALWAYS try to find a way because I guess they don't see any alternative.
As for the terrorists, they could use the desperation of the Mexicans for getting into our country to their advantage. I say COULD because there haven't been any caught yet that we know of. There have been Arabs I believe, but we don't know if they were terrorists or not.
sure women and children have been killed in war. it does happen. But it was NOT intentional, save the nuclear bombs in Japan. But even then we didn't quite know what that would do. To do it intentionally is NOT what America is about.
I have to agree with Mike, landmines are not the answer. We proved with the Minutemen in Arizona that simple manpower coupled with adequate LEO back-up will secure the border.
Remember, America is all about the white-hatted cowboy...we don't go around killing people indiscriminately, regardless of what you hear from AP and Reuters re: wedding parties.

Most Latinos are legal immigrants and decent people and are also proud, hardworking Americans. They serve in our military, are integrating themselves well, and are upholding American values more and more (look how many are voting Republican these days). The colour of their skin doesn't matter, their ideology does.
While illegal immigration is a HUGE problem, simply because it puts unexpected strain on the government and social services, eating time and money, the liberal traitors in our midst is a much more pressing problem, and our terrorist permeable borders another problem.
The issue of Bush's betrayal at the borders is probably the most important one in America.
Yet, discussion of that issue gets you moved to "Chat"
In addition to securing the borders, we need to expel every Muslim who is not an American citizen.
The more casualties, the better they like it. Although I think killing any infidel is more than acceptable to them.
I hate to say it, but that is exactly what we are going to get.
Instead of common sense border security, we will get more laws restricting our freedoms.

Very true. But we're not being called to make ANY sacrifices on behalf of the war effort (completely opposite of our national, shared sacrifice of WWII).
We should steel ourselves for the inevitable. Given our current border situation and near-impossibility to stop something like today's London attacks, something similar in the USA is probably inevitable.
Hopefully, our resolve will be more like the Israelis than the Spanish.

You want to fix the illegal immigration problem? Call out the National Guard (note: not the ACTIVE MILITARY), and first offense jail time and business closure of all employers who employ illegals knowingly. Set up a guidline for employment if you want to get really serious and make it both a state and federal statue. I dont mean I-9 forms either.

I'll tell you how to fix the problem. Cut off ALL U.S. aid to these countries. Give them a list of our demands before we send them another penny!
I've seen it myself. Disturbing. Least the Indians are on our side. They know what the Muslims are capable of.
