SEATTLE - Bob Dylan made his mark playing in one cafe. Soon, he'll be in thousands.
Starbucks Coffee Co. has reached a deal to produce and exclusively release a CD of 10 Dylan recordings from New York's Gaslight Cafe in 1962, when he was just finding himself as a songwriter. The Gaslight, in Greenwich Village, was a focal point of the folk revival in the early '60s.
"Bob Dylan: Live at the Gaslight 1962" will be available at Starbucks stores in the United States and Canada on Aug. 30. It includes the earliest known recordings of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," as well as folk standards "Barbara Allen" and "The Cuckoo."

I really didn't need one but now I have another reason not to go to starbucks.
Dylan wasn't really worth listening to until 1965 when he went electric.
bump for later to set matters straight
Dylan has lived his life in an unconservative way, so it will take more than song lyrics and sound bites to convice me. What has he done that proves to you he's conservative?
Do you ever make any rational arguments of your own?
I can't wait to download this on LimeWire...
haha.
Funny how Starbucks sells more CDs than the music stores. The Virgin Megastore in Burbank had a roof collapse during the January rains, and they refused to rebuild it.
I agree. All these horrible singers are just fodder for hippy potheads who apparently now have replaced their parents' garages and basements with Starbucks.
i have no idea how bob dylan feels today, how he votes, or what he currently believes is the truth. but i do know he has spread the gospel of christ many times to many in need of hearing it. here is a partial transcript of bob dylan in concert on april 20, 1980:
(before performing the song 'Solid Rock') Man asked me on the street today, he said, Well, if you believe all those things, he said, I just can't seem to love my enemy. That's a tough thing to do, you know? That's an impossible thing to do actually. Cause the natural mind, you know,
can't comprehend that. So if youre in the natural mind you just can't comprehend loving your enemy. That seems like a
foolish thing to do, and it is. However, the supernatural mind can comprehend that. So when Jesus says love thy neighbor
as thyself, he wasn't exactly saying roll over and play dead. Actually, I wanna tell you a story here. We were playing
in
about four months ago someplace, it was a college campus, I forget exactly where, Arizona, I think it was. Is that where
it was? Where you there? All right. Anyway, I read the Bible a lot, you know, I mean it just happens I do and
So it says
certain things in the Bible that I wasn't really aware of until just recently. And, you know, at universities, you know, it's
like
they have a higher learning people there. They teach them different
like philosophies, so people they study all these
different philosophies like Plato and who else now? Who? Jimmy Reed. Well, I can't remember all their names. Nietzsche
and those people like that. Anyway, in the Bible it has specific
it tells you specific things and in the Book of Daniel, and in
the Book of Revelation, which just might apply to these times here. And it says certain wars are gonna, soon about gonna
happen. I can't say exactly when, you know, but say, pretty soon anyway and
So, at that time, you know, it mentions a
country to the furthermost north and it has its symbol: the bear. It's also is spelt R O S H in the Bible, now, this is written
quite a few years ago, so it can't really but apply to one country that I know. Unless you know another country that it can
apply to. Maybe you do, I don't. But then there's another country called, I can't remember what the name of it is, but it's in
the eastern part of the world and it's got an army of 200 million foot soldiers. Now there's only one country that that could
actually be. So anyway, I was telling this story to these people. I shouldn't have been telling it to them, I just got carried
away. And
I mentioned to them, Well, you all watch now because Russia is gonna come down and attack the Middle
East. It says this in the Bible. And I been reading all kinds of books my whole life, magazines, books, whatever I could get
my hands on, anywhere, and I never found any truth in any of them, if you wanna know the truth. But these things in the
Bible they seem to uplift me and tell me the truth. So I said this country is gonna come down and attack, and all these people,
there must have been 50,000
[voice of band member): If there was one.] If there was one, thats right. No, I dont know,
there wasn't 50,000, there was, I dont know, maybe 3,000, they all just booed. You know, like they usually do, they just
booed. I said Russia's gonna attack the Middle East and they all went boo. They couldn't hear that, they didn't believe it.
And a month, a month later Russia moved their troops into, I think, Afghanistan, it was, and the whole situation changed, you
know. I'm not saying this to tell you, you know, that they was wrong and I was right or anything like that. But these things
that is mentioned in the Bible I pay mighty close attention to. So it does say that, talking about this man here called Anti-Christ.
Now we've had a lot of previews of what the Anti-Christ could be like. We had that Jim Jones, he's like a preview. We
had Adolf Hitler, a preview. Anyway, the Anti-Christ is gonna be a little bit different than that. He's gonna bring peace to the
world for a certain length of time. But he will eventually be defeated to. Supernaturally defeated. And God will intervene.
But you're still gonna have to be aware of these things. You need something strong to hang on to. I don't know what you got
to hang on to, but I got something called a solid rock to hang on to that was manifested in the flesh, and justified in the spirit,
and seen by angels, preached on in the world.
the House of Burnt Coffee>>>>>>
What a great song title that would be! Where is Ray Stevens?
In my humble opinion people who drink Starbucks have defective taste buds, or maybe they so want to be in the IN crowd that they would drink green swamp water if it was declared to be the IN drink?
I really didn't need one but now I have another reason not to go to starbucks.>>>>>>
If you really like GOOD coffee you have all the reason you need NOT to go to Starbucks!
He denied Christ and any conversion to Christianity sometime between 1981 and 1983, most likely closer to 1981. The so-called conversion to Christianity didn't lead to much lifestyle change, if any, according to rock historian Steve Turner. (See Christianity Today, May 21, 2001.)
Good one. Green Swamp Water. Hahahahaha.
Not meaning any offense by this, but honestly, what do you know about his private life?
As I stated in an earlier post, I just finished reading his book in which he writes a little about his privat life. Not in any detail but snippits, such as:
Moving several times to get away from tha gawkers, who just want to be near him. Reflecting on how he does not understand this from these people, nor did he seek it out.
Talking about what fun it is and how important it is for him to just be able to go to his gets baseball or soccer games.
Talking about his being an "icon" and saying he never wanted any of that and reading his questioning of why people even think of him as being such a thing.
Talking about how the most important thing to him is his wife, his kids and just trying to live as normal as possible.
And if you do not want to know anything about the man by avoiding his lyrics then you are missing out and are being closed on who he is. Try just this one:
'Forever Young'
May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
The words to that song came to Bob Dylan as he held his newborn baby in his arms for the first time. It was intended as a prayer and wish for the child he loved.
See my post #32.
As big of a fan as I am of Bob Dylan, having seen him numerous times and with about 15 of his albums, (from 'Highway 61' to some of his more current ones) there is one claim that I have never made, nor have I heard anyone else make the claim that he is a "musical genius."
I also am 100% certain he would never claim that title.
What I do consider him to be is a poet and a songwriter. A 'wordsmith' as some have tagged it. In that regard, he has an ability to which there are few in his category, as to his prolificness and ability. You may not appreciate his lyrics, or his voice, but only a fool would argue that the man does not have a talent for writing songs/poems.
Do you only measure a man if he follows Christ? The man is Jewish. Can Jews not also have the same basic values of Christians in the way they life there life and their desires for their families?
So, I choose to not buy anything of his. Why do you give a hoot about that decision of mine?
Having read the rest of the thread, and your several comments, I think we simply come at this from wildly different places.
You appear to be viewing him through the lens of how good a Christian he is. Totally OK by me, but I don't tend to judge songwriters that way.
I was simply trying to point out another side of the man in an apparently vain attempt to enlighten you on the subject. However, my words to you seem wasted, as you apparently have you mind set and closed.
I notice you do not comment on anything I have said, so as engage in a discussion. You only instead come back with comments such as you have. Thus continuing this discussion is pointless.
