Hi, Amy:
RESPONSIBILITIES
I was just a kitten, don't you see?
When a big calloused hand reached down and rescued me
It pulled me from the rubble and we met eye-to eye
A dark haired human, who said "How you doin', lil guy?"
He slipped inside his warm sweaty vest
While pops and loud bangs echoed outside my nest
It felt so safe, I don't know why
As he took me back to the tent to meet the guys
>BR> Hands, feet and faces as far as I could see
While I was fed cool water and mushed up MREs
So many laughs and smiles so wide
I was just a kitten, but it tickled my pride
I was slipped in a boot for the Sergeant's Inspection
They were hiding me from his ominous rejection
Until the super high sound before a mortar attack
When we ran to the shelter and crouched back to back
I was petted, passed around and kneaded as the bombs went off
And then I felt strange hands. Heard an unfamiliar cough
I looked up as the Sergeant looked down
His smile was as white and big as a clown's
So, now I'm a Mascot, all vetted and primed
I even have a family to live with when we've all done our time
The Great Cat Up Above certainly looked out for me
In return, I have a litter of guys to get home, don't you see?

Good morning, Jack.
Thank you for today's poem. I hope that you don't mind me reposting it. When I read it, this is the picture that came to mind.
