That never occurred to me. I've never seen them but I suppose I wouldn't as I believe they never go above ground as I recall . Do they build mounds very similar to ants?

Moles and gophers build little mounds at the entrances to their burrows.

Call a pest exterminator...they can tell you inside of 5 minutes.

I missed you pinging me back but it seems the consensus is moles. I had a similar problem when I put in a new yard and the new top soil was FUBARED after the grass came in within two months. Back in '95 I think it was Home Depot where I picked some mole toxic smoke bombs and I never saw them again. ironically it seems they went to my neighbors yard.
