LOS ANGELES -- Teachers are expected to bear long days, challenging students and demanding parents. Now, apparently, some teachers are baring too much of themselves. School boards and superintendents increasingly are pursuing dress codes for teachers. At issue is the same kind of questionable attire most often associated with students.
In some districts, teachers can get dressed down for wearing skimpy tops, short skirts, flip flops, jeans, T-shirts, spandex or baseball caps. Spaghetti is fine in the cafeteria, but shirts supported by spaghetti straps are not welcome in the classroom.
District 11 in Colorado Springs, Colo., for example, prohibits sexually provocative items. That includes clothing that exposes "cleavage, private parts, the midriff or undergarments," district rules say.
In Georgia's Miller County, skirts must reach the knee. Elsewhere in the state, hair curlers are disallowed in Harris County and male teachers in Talbot County must wear ties two or three times a week.

My school (in TX) had a relatively strict dress code for teachers, we couldn't wear blue jeans except of Fridays, and only with a school T-shirt (polo style). We had to adhere to the same dress code as the students other than that. I always felt I needed to dress professionally (mostly dresses) and look BETTER than we expected the kids to look.
But I still saw teachers (women) who just looked sloppy and unkempt, and I saw an awful lot of cleavage.
I don't know why adhering to a dress code that calls for professional, non provacative clothing would be a problem. At least not if you're there to teach.

Yes, I've heard the term before, and I think it is actually a good way of putting it.
At my last school teachers, male and female alike, couldn't wear tennis shoes, jeans, or t-shirts, except on certain days, students had a strict dress code, but it wasn't really enforced, such are public skewls.
Very true. Teachers work from 7-3. Only six hours. Standard office job is eight.
They would say that they make up those other two hours in grading and prep. However, that doesn't explain all their "teacher planning" days and the 60+ days off during the summer. Pretty nice schedule.
yep. Plus they get one hour a day for planning, in which most of them either grade a few papers and read, or watch cable t.v., or go on their computer, etc.
Our dress code was enforced (for the most part, altho like all things, some people did manage to skirt things!). Of course, this was in a rural area of TX and I think they had not yet gotten the memo that all public educators are to be liberals! We actually had signs on our doors after 9/11 (provided by the school) that said God Bless America!

The summer is great, but teacher planning days.....those are rather like going to Hell! It always reminded me why I wanted to at least TRY to be interesting for my students! ;)

It is a problem everywhere. I see people wear in public things I would only wear to do gardening and mulching and that doesn't begin to touch on the immodest attire of many people these days. Whatever happened to class and style. I'm glad when I was growing up we had movie stars that epitomized glamour and not the cheesy, slutty stuff one sees now.

My wife is a teacher and she works 8:00 - 3:30 Monday through Friday. Then, she brings home a mountain of paperwork every night and wrestles with it until about 10:00 or so.
Over the weekend, she prepares and grades tests.
During all this time she has to put up with all the idiot parents who call her all hours of the night whining that junior is getting a lousy grade and it could not possibly be that it is because the little precious isn't completing the work.
I have an office job and put in 9 hours daily plus some on weekends, but my wife puts in much longer hours than I do.

You wrote exactly what I was going to write.
My wife works her fanny off during the year.
I make more than twice as much as her and put up with 1/3 the aggravation.
But weirdly, she totally LOVES her job.
Unlike me.
