For various and sundry reasons lots of people do not go away on "vacations" per se.
It's very rare that we even spend one night away from home, let alone a week or two at a time............but we do plan lots of day trips.
Personally I find it less stressful for planning/packing and because we can find lots of things to do within a 2-3 hour drive, it spreads the "vacation" funds over the course of several months.
Since we are scattered all over the map, let's share favorite places for day trips be it beaches, museums, amusement parks, whathave you.
Thank you for reminding me about the zoo...........the Salisbury Zoo is only an hour away and we haven't been there in ages!
"When we lived in Georgia and North Carolina we took lots of day trips! To the beach, to the mountains. Whatever sounded good in the morning! We hit every minor league baseball team within a 200 mile drive! Ah, the memories. Now we pretty much stay at home! I'm a home owner's widow! We never get to go anywhere because there are too many projects around this little fixer-upper we live in!
I lived like that for too long and missed out on too much. Thankfully I have knocked off all of the major stuff and it's just regular maintenance now. Daytrips that do not involve Home Depot are now possible. Click my name to see how I handle "light housework".
We're also in a great location for day trips - Virginia Beach and Norfolk are only 2 hours, even Williamsburg is only about 3 hours.
And we're just 20 minutes from a beach on the Chesapeake Bay in one direction and the Chincoteague/Assateague National Wildlife Refuge in the other. Assateague has one of the most beautiful stretches of Atlantic beach I have ever seen.
I'm soooooooooooooo jealous! but that's it, next payday we're getting a pool. LOL! Actually we have already planned to do so.
Now those are the places my family usually went too when I was a kid living in Pennsylvaia. We had family living on the Alnemarle Sound in NC and Williamsburg, so those were our staging areas for our Atlantic seaboard adventures. I really miss that area
I totally understand about all the projects - but I'm no widow about it - I'm expected to swing a hammer with him :) In fact the vinyl siding was delivered yesterday!

Home Depot is a day trip for us - because the nearest one is over an hour away, so we always make other plans of stuff to do while we are up there - no point in wasting a trip!
The sunset is beautiful on Lake Michigan. You can see the curve of the Earth - that is if you can see past all those darn bikinis... :-)
I'd say we probably prefer the at least somewhat longer trips, a night or two or more.
Oh, well, yes, on second thought: we're about an hour from the foothills of the Sierra. I do have some favorite spots to go there, for snow in the winter, for lakes, streams and prettiness the rest of the time. I take various configurations of the wife and kids, or no one.

Can't say as that bikinis would be distracting to me :)
but I have been told of those beautiful sunsets.
I don't mind a night or two - that is manageable with making arrangements with someone to take care of the dogs.
None of you realize that you are doing my husband a major favor with all your talk of mountains..........eh wants to spend some time in the Shenandoah Valley in August and I've been real hesitant. But since the highest point around here is actually an old sand dune that has solidified enough that on it stands a lighthouse - I guess a trip to the mountains would be nice for a change :)
...and a much longer drive. 8>) I miss the historical significance (and the rest of my family) of the east coast. It's beautiful country out here but not much major US history. Folks here make a big deal out of places that someone who knew a guy that worked for Lewis and Clark's blacksmith might have spent the night. Just kidding.
I love historically significant places as well.
one of my favorite places to hang out in Dover was a tavern/restaurant that was in a converted Victorian Mansion in the historic district.
In keeping with the historic nature of the area they have a brass plaque on the wall that states:
On this site in 1775
NOTHING happened.

Hi Everyone!
We are in the Texas hill country so a day trip is usually less then an hour away. My favorite is the German town of Fredericksburg. Lots of eating, window shopping and did I mention...beer! You can even drink the beer outside the shops. Enchanted Rock is nice and we have a park called Los Maples that is beautiful in the fall. There is also Comfort, Bandara,Medina and good old San Antonio and the riverwalk less then one hour away.
