Although I dislike Johnny Depp's political views, they wouldn't keep me from seeing his films.
Even actors have a right to their opinions. The problem is when they think themselves authorities because of their celebrityhood. Depp, I don't think, stands on a soapbox.
In the tradition of european fairy tales, children were not immune from coming to harm. That would classify it as a dark book by today's standards.
And that Grandpa Joe is the biggest load in the history of all movies! He lays there like a lump for twenty years, while his grandson tries to scrap together some living for the whole family.
About ten minutes after the kid gets tickets to someplace really cool, that lazy old bastard is up and dancing around the room!
If I was Charlie, I would have kicked his skinny old ass.
It has a dark look because the director is TIM BURTON... who ALWAYS does his films stylized.. IE.. original Batman, Edward Scissor Hands, Big Fish etc...
I don't care much for Depp's off screen politics, but I will say this.
He did wise up and realize that the work he does does matter and influences children... once his kids were born he started only doing films that he felt were appropriate. I salute him for that, and frankly as much as I don't agree with his politics he is a much better actor than most of the clowns in Hollywood today.
I have a suspicion that this film will flop, largely because there is no need to redo it... The original stands the test of time.
Well, yeah - they do sortof come to harm, though we are told, even in the book, that they'll be fine. It wasn't ~scary~ and dark. I haven't seen the trailer, I'm not really interested in seeing this, but the level of ~scary~ in the first movie is all that was ever in the book. It wasn't a suspense thriller or anything.

So, you research every actor, director, producer for religious and moral views before seeing a movie?

The intended audience for the books was pre-teen. If you're seven or eight, then the books are suspense thrillers.
OK - I can see that.... but suspense thriller is relative.... it was age appropriate for children. It wasn't "Steven King" dark.
Liked P of C. Took a long time for me to ever see one of his movies after Edward Scissorhands. Will go see this one. I don't think the Oompa Loompa song, if it's even in there, will be very light as it was in the original. This version looks very dark
No, not "steven king dark" and I wouldn't take a pre-teen to see most of the movies based on his books. People forget these days, there are books and movies for kids and books and movies for adults (when I say adults, I don't just mean x-rated, but mature themes).
By the way, I'm shocked that nobody has jumped on Dahl for being a Satanist, since he did write The Witches.

'"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" I believe is the correct name of the story. I liked that as a kid, also "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator", though I don't remember it much. My fave was "James and the Giant Peach"."
Did you ever read "Danny, Champion of the World?" That was one of my absolute favorite Dahl books when I was a kid.
Try "Boy." One of his adult books.
Give them time.... they don't know what all to be outraged about yet ;~D
