Your Best Memories of a Rock Concert (vanity)
Few Remaining Brain Cells | 6/28/05 | Pissant

Posted on 06/28/2005 3:16:46 PM PDT by pissant

Many Freepers grew up in what they considered to be the golden age of Rock concerts. Of course, it may have had more to do with the fact that we were young and fanatical about the music in our youth. These days, ‘ol Pissant prefers the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Military Band music and Jazz, but I have some very fond memories of the craziness of my Rock concert yesteryears. I’m quite sure many of you have some concert stories that rival and surpass mine. So this thread is the place to share!

Following are 2 concert experiences that left a permanent scar on me! ;o)

Wow. You got to see some great bands. Unfortunately, I was a baby at the time and wasn't able to appreciate them then. :-)

The greatest concert ever (in my opinion) would feature Jethro Tull and ZZ Top.

Wouldn't that be a strange match-up! LOL

Pat Metheny Group - Miami Beach, 1979 American Garage Tour. I've been a "Pat" Head ever since, and I've seen them five times since, but that was the show that started it all for me.

I saw Linda Ronstadt in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1979. That was before she opened her mouth to do other things besides singing. She'd have to buy me a car to go see her, now.

Saw Heart on their "Bebe le Strange" tour in the late 70's. Biggest memory is they canceled the first time (Pan Am Center, Las Cruces, NM) after making the crowd wait for 2 hours (no warmup band) and when the announcement was made that Heart canceled (drummer was sick) the place erupted into a riot. Since me and my friends were freshly recruited into the AF (2 years) we were worried about going to jail so we beat feet as fast as possible. Heart came back a while later and put on a great show. Opening act was Van Wilkes (Texans should know who he is)...Man, that guy could pick a guitar!!!

Like I said, I couldn't see them.

I think it was a then-Daveless Van Halen, Santana, Heart, Dave Mason. There is a good write-up on it at http://www.superseventies.com/watkinsglen.html

The crowd was more fun than the writer notes.

Blue Oyster Cult - Saw them first in 1973 for a can of food.. it was a benefit show. Had no idea who they were except a friend told me they were like Black Sabbath but with synthesizers.. That was enough for me, and the price was right. They proceeded to rock my 14 year old ass clean off. I loved that band for many years. They did this guitar orchestra thing where all 5 of them would pick up guitars and stand at the edge of the stage in a line and wail away.. I was never the same after :)

But they needed more cowbell.

"Who played at Cal Jam??"

I was there! Deep Purple, Sabbath, ELP.. a bunch more I can't remember lol.

Oh and I should add to my previous post, my first date with my wife was at a Blue Oyster Cult concert in 1976. We were married in '78 and are still together... 26 years now. So BOC is sort of "our" band.
