Many Freepers grew up in what they considered to be the golden age of Rock concerts. Of course, it may have had more to do with the fact that we were young and fanatical about the music in our youth. These days, ol Pissant prefers the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Military Band music and Jazz, but I have some very fond memories of the craziness of my Rock concert yesteryears. Im quite sure many of you have some concert stories that rival and surpass mine. So this thread is the place to share!
Following are 2 concert experiences that left a permanent scar on me! ;o)
That always makes me cringe...
I did, too. He was a good guitarist for his age, which was around 17 when I saw him. "Beat So Lonely" is a guilty pleasure song of mine...
What happened to him anyway?
I probably stopped listening to his new material after "Brutal Youth". I liked some of his mid-80's albums (Blood and Chocolate, Spike) but have only likes singles of his latest releases. Thank goodness for I Tunes!
Paul McCartney, (my wife saw the Beatles in LA), King Crimson, Iron Butterfly (loudest concert I ever heard), Black Oak Arkansas, Prairie League, Commander Cody, BTO, Joe Cocker (barfed his brains out right after the show - *hitfaced as hell), Foghat, The Hollies, Golden Earring, actually too many to remember because when I lived in Charleston, SC, the auditorium was a block away and prices were $5. But the two absolute best concerts were Ringo Starr's All Star Band. One concert he had Jack Bruce, Peter Frampton and some other greats and since Ginger Baker lives close to Denver he came in to play drums for White Room. Just awesome.
The best song out of the whole bunch was "Live and Let Die" with fireworks.
You just reminded me that I saw Harry Chapin at my college in 1978 - actually I was with the Program Council and got to usher the concert, get in free, and get a "Bananas" visor (which my roommate stole). He was GREAT.
I have the ticket stub. I can't see the month but it was in 1981 at the Hollywood Palladium. Wall of Voodoo opened. It cost $8.50. That being said, I remember leaving kind of disappointed, that all the songs sounded the same. Who knew they would stop touring soon after?
I concur!
I don't know. I'm just going to click around till I find it. My guess is ABC or CBS.
Must've been the Black Sea tour, much more hard rock record than their usual fare. That was back when Terry Chambers was still with them. One of the most underrated drummers, who just fell off the face of the Earth.
Cool to see there's another Duke's devotee out there. In fact, when I was trying to come up with my Freeper name, I almost chose "The Mole From the Ministry."
Fun thread!
My very first concert (other than "Up With People" yikes!) was The Police.
My favorite in high school had to be ZZ Top with Night Ranger. Envision four very preppy high school girls at a ZZ Top concert. It was awesome!
The Def Leppard concert (forget the year, '84 maybe?) wasn't as memorable as all the sleeveless Union Jack shirts walking around school the next day were.
I never followed the Dead (too young for that era and not a pot smoker) but I was practically a U2 groupie. I saw them in Phoenix/Tempe several times and went to Denver and San Diego as well. Although The Joshua Tree was a better album and tour, I loved the final Rattle and Hum show. BB King played with them. Amazing!
And there was the time Cat Stevens showed up at my college as a guest of the Muslim Student Union (or some such group). We went to his talk just to see if we could get him to sing Peace Train. Since it was post-conversion, we left seriously disappointed.
Oh, I had tickets to the Billy Idol show in Tucson that was cancelled because he had a "contact lens stuck to his eye".
1992? If so, I was standing about 25 yards behind you.
