Your Best Memories of a Rock Concert (vanity)
Few Remaining Brain Cells | 6/28/05 | Pissant

Posted on 06/28/2005 3:16:46 PM PDT by pissant

Many Freepers grew up in what they considered to be the golden age of Rock concerts. Of course, it may have had more to do with the fact that we were young and fanatical about the music in our youth. These days, ‘ol Pissant prefers the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Military Band music and Jazz, but I have some very fond memories of the craziness of my Rock concert yesteryears. I’m quite sure many of you have some concert stories that rival and surpass mine. So this thread is the place to share!

Following are 2 concert experiences that left a permanent scar on me! ;o)

No! Someone else was talking about seeing the Beatles and another guy saw the Grass Roots in 1967. You are in good company! :O)

My son went to some concert or another. He had on a really interesting monkey shirt over his t-shirt. A member of the band asked him if he could have the shirt. My son gave it to him...much nicer than his mother!

I saw The Clash in 1983, at the Aragon Brawlroom in Chicago. Best show of my life. Saw The Jam there, too. Other memorable shows--Trouble Funk at the Vic--man, there were more people on stage than in the audience, but they were amazing. The Pogues, also at the Vic. The Jesus and Mary Chain on the first US tour.

And finally, just Sunday night I saw The Arcade Fire and David Byrne at the Hollywood Bowl--amazing. Especially The Arcade Fire. Best new band I've heard in a while.

TULL! I love them. Saw them two summers ago in Las Vegas, and I can't wait to go again.

Just saw Steve Winwood - great show.

I've seen James Taylor three times (with Arnold McCuller singing background all three times) - last time was during the recall campaign here in CA. He only made a short mention of that and moved on.

Saw John Mellencamp in about 1999 - pre-Gore years. It was a great show. After some of the stuff he's come out with politically, I won't be back.

Jimmy Buffett many times. Always a good time.

Won Phil COllins tickets in 1998 - great show, and with Arnold McCuller (that voice!) as his backup, particularly in the Philip Bailey role.

And speaking of which - had a blast at Earth Wind and Fire 10 years ago. Moodies about the same time.

And one of my absolute favorites - Toby Keith four times - the first time for free at the Alameda County Fair in 96.

I love live music.

In college, Billy Joel twice, the first time for cheap in a little Hartford concert hall. Then "The STranger" came out, and it was to the megacoliseum.

Let's see, many years ago in high school, I saw the daylong concert at Roosevelt Raceway in NY: Joni Mitchell, Tom Scott and the LA Express, a cameo by Elton John with the Beach Boys, who knows who else. It was excellent.

And my first... John Denver!! :-)

Great thread.

And Tull was probably the best I've seen. What amazing musicians.

You reminded me of the other major act in that Roosevelt Raceway daylong concert: CSNY. It was great. I don't know how I survived the day, though! :-)

And I thought I had a history of losing (or taking off) my shirt....

Bangla Desh. When Dylan walked out on stage unannounced, MSG erupted, with everyone spontaneously rushing toward the stage. At one point there was an entire all-star rock orchestra on stage: Harrison, McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Dylan, Leon Russell . . . can't even remember them all.

As we were waiting to get off the ferry, going back to Fire Island, we saw our friends who were going to the second show waiting to get on. We were jumping up and down and shouting, "Dylan was there!"
