I need help with LOTR. Two friends and I were discussing the books and movies last weekend. Friend 1 observed that the relationship between Frodo and Sam (in the movies) had homosexual overtones. Friend 2 retorted that the relationship is based on the master/servant relationship of old England and that Friend 1 was looking at it through American eyes, where rugged individualism is more prized. I--caught in the middle--had to admit that I thought that Sean Astin overplayed Sam at times but was great overall.
So, was Friend 1 right about the gay overtones, or was Friend 2's explanation correct? I'm rather at a loss over the whole debacle.
The other actor that cracks me up to see the change when he was out of character is Billy Boyd. He has such a thick Scottish accent in real life, that when he was interviewed he had only one vowel "EA" Sometimes he's incomprehensible in interviews!
The contrast between character and actor is more than usually pronounced in this case. Not that there's anything wrong with an actor's being a personal cipher, but it's still a surprise when one is used to, say, Charlton Heston.
He has a cute voice.

In films you can understand him. It's like my uncles from Belfast ... you just have to get your mental filter adjusted.
Heh...at one point he had some audio interviews on his website...my sister and I listened to some, as they related to his time when filming LOTR. The interviewer was a Scot, too. You could understand them as long as you paid a lot of attention, so long as they were speaking calmly. Every so often they'd crack each other up...and there was no WAY you could decipher it. Just a lot of Scottish sounds. ;-)

The subtitles on DVD features fix that. It's great!

Yep! Doesn't work with audio interviews, though. But we just did a lot of rewinding and playing little parts over. Not much of a hardship.

I still remember that first opening sequence of FOTR, though, and the delight and the astonishment..."Galadriel's talking...! There's the Shire! There's Gandalf in the Cart! He's singing the Road song!" And the warm spot PJ will have in my heart for my favorite Christmas presents for three years running.
The funniest thing about my first viewing of FOTR is that I absolutely did not hear the soundtrack, so blown away was I about everything else.
The artwork of LOTR, though, far surpasses everything else. I loved the sets the very best...and I recommend all those coffee table books with their beautiful pictures.
Actually there were ~four~ hobbits in the bed at the end.
