Police said Wednesday that an Augusta man they arrested hit his wife in the head with a hammer because she drank their last can of beer. Paul Sellars, 62, of the 2100 block of Kennedy Drive, was charged with aggravated assault under Georgia's Family Violence Act, Richmond County jail records state. Sellars is accused of hitting his wife with a hammer because she drank the last can of beer in the house. Sheriff's Lt. James Young said Kathleen F. Sellars, 56, told police that at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, she got into an argument with Mr. Sellars because she had taken the last beer. Mr. Sellars got angry and hit his wife in the head with a hammer, Lt. Young said, and she ran next door to call 911. An incident report states that police found her bleeding from the top left of her head from an inch-long cut. Lt. Young said she was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where doctors kept her a few hours for observation. He said the cut did not require stitches. Lt. Young said Mr. Sellars alleged that Mrs. Sellars bit him on his right hand during the fight, but officers reported that marks found on his hand didn't match the pattern of bite marks. According to the report, Mr. Sellars, whom police observed to be intoxicated, said he was simply "trying to get (Mrs. Sellars') attention."
