All property beongs to the government and always has. "Owners" are just paying varying amounts of rent depending on how much control they want to assume over a property. With standard rent - you can't knock out the interior walls; with "ownership" you can...but the government can take over full and real control (ownership) of the property any time they want for what they deem to be a higher and better use. The compensation they offer in return is compensation for your loss of use, not for the property itself.

This has been true since the founding of the Republic - it's only recently that governments have started deciding that the "ownership" level of property control gives too many rights to the "owner" when the government has something else in mind for the property.

Up until this age, imminent domain was used for public use of property, now it's being used for transfer of ownership from foe to friend...........
