We were at a restaurant and the evening had been so abysmal (the guy was so obnoxious and full of himself and I barely got to say two words all night) that when I went to the ladies' room, I actually did very strongly consider climbing out the window, slipping into my car and hightailing it out of there.

I'm too nice....I just couldn't do it.

So I pleaded a headache instead, made my escape and NEVER allowed friends to "fix me up" again.

That was you?!?!?

How have you been?

This is NOT quite a date, in the normal sense, but funny, and ironic, and worth passing on...

I had a very good friend, up until about 5 years ago. We grew up together as kids..same block...went to elementary, JHS, HS together, and even ended up at the same college, though not planned that way. After college, 1968 I went off to Quantico, he to get his CPA..When I got out, we saw each other occasionally, both living in the Metro NY area...We'd gotten in the habit, every three months, of having dinner, with our wives..it became our own little "gourmet club" kind of thing....we'd research which restaurant, get the reservations...a good time always. Anyhow, about 7 years ago, three weeks after we'd just been to his youngest daughter's Bat Mitzvah..he calls me to say that he and his wife have split..he's moved out of the house..and he's met someone, and would hope that we can continue to do our dinner thing. Anyone who knows a couple for a long time..when they split..you often get caught in the position of choosing sides...but the wife and I were OK with it...I knew him a very long time..we were friends first, and we weren't really drawn into the break-up..So, he says he'll pick the restaurant...we meet them there two weeks hence. His date is junior acct rep in his office..about 23 years old, and about 2 years older than my oldest daughter..That's a very weird vibe..double-dating wih your daughter..you have NOOOOO idea....all these images flash through your head, especially after a bottle of wine..She's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier either, and he's working very, very hard, to keep the conversation going..telling all the old stories that we'd all ( except her) heard almost ad nauseum. So he's telling her about how when I was doing PLC summers in college, he was protesting the Vietnam war, yet we stayed friends. Well,at the mention of "Vietnam", she kind of stirs...says, "Vietnam. I remember that. I had to read a book about it in college." Ever feel very, very old, instantly? First time it ever happened to me..

BTW..she moved in with him 2 months later...moved out a year after that. We still talk on the phone, but haven't had a meal together since..

Where to begin...

Maybe the Homecoming date back in HS...me with the lovely Karen, at one of the nicest restaurants in town, where the waitress dropped my coke onto my lap...

Or that time I actually got a date with my lovely and buxom hairstylist, who invited me to her home for dinner, where I proceeded to turn over my plate of food onto her nice white carpet...

Or possibly the time in LA when I met a lovely young and brainy blonde at a business convention, invited her back to my hotel for dinner at the rooftop rotating restaurant (with me trying to be Steve Suave the whole drive over), only to find out the restaurant was closed that day...

I could write a friggin' book. :(

Yuppers!

And, she is rather representative of the quality and type of woman I normally attract.

I've never been on a bad date, though a lot of women I have dated disagree with me on that one. I'd learn more, but none return my calls...

Blind date.
1979.
Arranged by my good friend Mike and his fiance Michelle.
Heavily hyped by Mike as someone who would be perfect for me. We would get along fabulously, etc.
We met at some concert (can't remember who).
Not bad looking, but not my type. I was obviously not hers.
Hung out for a while, and by the time the concert started, we had gone our seperate ways.
The "date" portion lasted maybe 45 minutes.

A month or so later, I called her and gave it a second chance. We went to an amusement park and had a good time all day. But, that "something" wasn't there.
I never saw her again.

OK, mine wasn't too bad.

I was VP of an organization in college that sponsored conservative speakers. I promised dates to a couple of guys to get them to attend. Both were the intellectual equivalents of green beans and word got out to BOTH of them that I had agreed to both dates. Never did that again!!
