I have to cut and paste some of this because a few of my letters are not working. this happened last night too. I turned off my computer for the night and the letters worked again this morning. ones not working:
left side shift key, q w e r t y number pad- zero, period and enter
Any ideas what could be causing this? I am really stressed about this, please dont joke too much!

Someone could've secretly spilled something on your keyboard.

Hmmm, if your Q W E R T and Y keys aren't working, then how did you type "Q W E R T and Y"?
Seriously, run out to your local computer shop or Best Buy and get another keyboard.

It was supposed to be a mild chuckle. I guess I missed that part, too.

Tracy, trying a known good keyboard is a start. Wife had similar problems yesterday, took her office PC to the shop, and it cleared up on its own-- the tech suspected a static buildup.
However, malware is always a suspect too- if you need links, let me know.

there is a possibility that there are heaps of dust in the keyboard. solution:
step 1: unplug the keyboard.
step 2: place it in the dishwasher, with the hot dry setting set to 'off'. (soap is not required)
step 3: turn on the dishwasher, let it run.
step 4: done. :)
To: trussell
1- Un-plug & then re-plug keyboard
2- blow off keyboard or turn it over & shake a little
3- run a virus or mal/ad-ware scan
4- go buy 2 new keyboards (always have a back up around)

I always keep a low-priced extra keyboard for just such emergencies. OfficeMax and OfficeDepot have them for around $10.
It's not worth the aggravation to troubleshoot the system any other way.

Get a can of compressed air and blow out the keyboard.

the tech suspected a static buildup.
Don't ever take your computer to that vendor again.
Would you take your car to a dealer that told you the muffler bearing needed replaced?
If the problem cleared up, it's likely just by jostling it around, cards/chips/cpu/other connections were completed.
Next time you have a major computer problem, open up the case, reseat the cards, re-plug various other connectors, chances are good the problem will go away.
Static buildup indeed. And yes, I'm qualified to know. Click on my homepage for some bloviation.
