Yes, let's keep something as a pet that can eat children.

Here's a fun game. Take the first two paragraphs of the article and replace "pit bulls" and associated text with similar text that illuminates the ridiculous arguments of the pro - pit bull crowd. See below.
Artificially-created deadly asps may be one of the most controversial breeds around, but they are also one of the most misunderstood by the public, snake experts said Friday in the wake of the fatal biting of a 12-year-old boy in San Francisco.
If bred and trained properly, artificially-created deadly asps can be wonderful pets, experts said. If there is a lack of stability, though, they have the proclivity and ability to inflict serious damage.
Duh.

Pit Bulls are awesome dogs. Everyone I've known have been great pets.
Unfortunately, losers such as drug dealers see them as a status symbol and treat them like crap so they're violent.
Any dog treated like that would turn out bad.
Rotts are in the same boat. Anyone that's ever dealt with them knows them as sweet loyal pets.

Leave me and whatever breed of canine I choose to own alone. It's none of anyones business.
Statistically, dog mauling is very small compared to the total population. If one thinks they are justified in curtailing my liberty, isn't it logical to curtail those who harm others/themselves by other means in the same manner?

I just watched the movie "Return to Me". Has anyone out there seen it, and, is Bob's dog a pitbull?
I was just wondering.

genetically, pits are some of the most aggressive dogs around.
Most breeds were historically selected for a calm temperament and nurturing character. Pits were bred only to fight and selected for completely opposite traits. They can be trained but dogs still rely on instinct.
The breed has probably calmed down recently due to less interest in fighting but hundreds of years of selection has done damage.

Anyone owning one of these monsters is out of his or her mind. I was talking to a friend not too many days ago and he used to have one and it turned on him and nearly bit his shoe in two. He summarily executed it out in the back. No one should own one of these unless they have about a billion dollar liability insurance policy and be willing to go to jail. I had one of these things come at me one time and thought I was a dead man.

When I was a kid. I raised a few American Black and Tan Coonhounds.
An elderly neighbor told me how they were developed to trail cougars. I thought nothing of this tidbit of information until recent years. Why?
After being mostly missing from the midwest for generations, cougar sightings are on the upswing. I can't say I've seen it with my own eyes, but I'm told these dogs will trail a big cat if given the opportunity. Hmmm.....How could they do that? They HAVEN'T BEEN TRAINED.
Think about that. Traits that were bred in decades ago are still present with NO outward appearance of the trait.

The one obvious fact that was bypassed by every pitt bull lover on this thread is that 12 year old boy died, from being mauled by a FAMILY PET PITT BULL! Just a random accident? A 4 yr. old niece of mine had her scalp ripped off to where it covered her face, and the pitt was packing her around by her skull. It took 17 operations over 11 yrs to return her face and scalp to a decent sense of recovery. I have owned and worked with many dogs over the last 50 yrs. My first pony ride was on a military police german shepherd on Guam. I have owned 3 labs, 1 border, 1 red & 1 tri queensland heeler, 1 golden, 1 wiemaraner and 1 german shorthair. I have worked with dogs, basically all of my life. My current dog, Jack, is a 1yr old yellow lab. Over the years, I have met many pitt bulls, some fighting dogs and some supposed pets. Some of these pitts did not survive our encounter. I would venture to say that I know more about the bad side of this breed than anyone on this thread. These dogs have no business in human society. None, other than fighting other dogs for profit. You idiots that keep these killers as pets, need a long hard reality check.

After working in an OR for around 20 years I can honestly say that the human I saw with the most lacerations still living was inflicted by a family pet. The sweet PitBbull that had always loved the family tried to maul Grandpa to death.
