'Hit Me Baby' Brings Back 80s 1-Hit Wonders

Did you ever wonder what happened to some of those one-hit wonders like Vanilla Ice, Tommy Tutone and Flock of Seagulls?

NBC did too, so they are bringing them back in "Hit Me Baby One More Time." What do they look like? What do they sound like?

We tracked down hitmakers from the past to take the stage to perform one more time and you can be the judge.

For three weeks, the former Top Ten artists will perform their trademark hit song along with one of today's current hits. At the end of the night, the live audience votes for their favorites! Watch "Hit Me Baby One More Time," Thursday nights at 9 on NBC 10.

Ahhh.. yes I remember...

Cold winter's day in Houston Texas me and my steady girlfriend cuddling in the back of my Camero with the engine off, parked at Wilson Pool. She is wearing a rabbit fur coat and me a sweater (with small rabbit hairs all over it now) and a pair of new blue jeans that seem to be chaffing me something terrible.

While Im busy making out, licking banana split and wild cherry lip gloss from my girlfriend's lips and at the same time trying to find that damn hook.... My girlfriend suddenly says "stop" and asks me to stop as she sits up and turns up the volume so she can listen to this new group called "The Babys" sing "Isn't It Time".

The Vapors - Turning Japanese

The Vapors were a a great band. Unfortunately, back then radio demanded songs with hooks -- 'Turning Japanese' had more hooks than a tackle-box; so that got the airplay.
The other great songs were buried : 'Jimmy Jones', 'Civic Hall', 'Waiting for the Weekend', 'Spring Collection', 'News at Ten', etc.

I first heard the Sonic Youth on WNYU in New York around 1987 or so, so I guess they could be considered an "obscure 80s band" with no hits.

A little trivia. The lead singer of Haircut 100 was the older brother to one of the guys in Crowded House, who had two great hits in the 1980s (Something so Strong and Don't Dream it's Over).

Fave Sonic Youth albums are "Evol" and "Sister." Also liked when they did a remake of "Get into the Groove" as Ciccone Youth, around '88-'89.
