The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Well, they do, up to a certain point. But in a pot, there is nowhere for the heat to go, unlike the soil, where the heat can be evenly dissipated.
Since the temps have stayed so high at night mine haven't put on many tomatoes lately. Last year I found a tomato that claimed it put on fruit even in the hot nights, but I had it in a pot and it died.
I have been giving my tomatoes eggshell shells to prevent blossom rot, and today I cut back some of the roma leaves, they were so thick, air wasn't getting through the plant. Don't think I did them any harm...

Probably. They've been saying there's a "change of thunderstorms" for four weeks. They hit tonight.
I'm not making that up. I've been watching for them everynight before watering the garden.
To: Corin Stormhands
er "chance of thunderstorms"

Here too... temp hit 104F this afternoon, thunderstorms formed up and went through about 7 pm. First rainfall here since June 1. Not that we got much rain... mostly a lot of lightning and wind.

We're getting a good solid rain. But I think it's supposed to blow through by morning.
mmmmm....morning...
I'd better sign off. Wife is leaving a little after 4:00 a.m. If I weren't driving Jr. to the airport just a few hours later, I'd take her. But her company will pay for the parking.
'nite folks

Yeah, I think I need to thin out the leaves on my plants too. I can put some eggshells in there, but there's no sign of blossom end rot yet. I think it's been either too wet for my zucchinis or I've got them too crowded. Some of the fruit is going all moldy.

Finally turned the compost pile today. I should be doing that more often.

Hey, uhmm... not to be alarmist or anything...
But Dennis just became a Cat 4. Pressure is dropping like a stone, now 950Mb and falling. Winds are 135+.
Still looks like it'll glance off the keys, but everytime they redraw that stinkin' forecast the line moves a little further east. Now it's pointed at the panhandle instead of LA. But... nauseatingly just took a little jog due north.
Looks like everything depends on the Cuba crossing. Lots of things could happen after that.

Interesting little tidbit... Yah know the exploding Ferrari dude? He's in here again tonight.
Said that he was contacted by Ferrari today. Seems that there was a recall on that model for a leaky fuel tank that was known to cause... ahem... 'splosions. They're saying that they are going to take care of the situation in some way.
Hah. Dang the bad luck. :-)

I posted a short blurb about the Gerber aircrew knife at the Hobbit Hole site. Now I can comprise a nice email to Gerber, and refer them to it. Pray that we're lucky, and Gerber is as astute and patriotic as Camillus. I'd love to add this knife to our "product line" if the price was right.

Heh. We already had one field trial get wiped out by a tropical storm. Hope they don't restart it until the hurricane pattern changes.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!! And good morning, too!
To: Corin Stormhands
I give up! This is, what, every day this week? I swear FR is going down the drain. ;)

You need to start your very own boob thread. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
To: Overtaxed
Heh.
I'm way too demure to start a boob thread.

mostly a lot of lightning and wind. Our son, David, was sitting at a bus stop right across from the stadium at UT and called us on his cell phone. He said he had 20 mins. to kill before his bus arrived. ;o)
He asked if we could hear the noise around him, but I couldn't. Seems he was sitting in the shelter while the lightning was popping all around him, and while he was talking with us, he said it looked like it struck someplace close to him. YIKES! SSQ was talking to him at the time and heard it. He was saying that it was the first time it had really rained in Austin since the beginning of June,
