The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yep...they've already come to view me as a calming force...they will tweet really loudly when I leave and silently gaze at me when I return sometimes. In other words, they've already figured out how to call me.

Still, one of the question is, can I really do this? I know that I have to in the case of these two...they cannot be kept as pets, they will die anyways at around 12 -18 weeks of age. Will I be able to do it again?

As Joshua says "Who knows? I don't know. Only God knows."

12-18 weeks? Why, are they terminally ill?

Dude, we had a conversation about the subtle yet obvious moral messages of "Fruits Basket". You're fairly weird.

Basically yeah...their legs give out under their weight...they are bred to get huge, beyond the ability of their legs to hold them. And also beyond the ability of their hearts. If their legs don't break underneath them, they die of heart attacks.

Also, next week, I will begin actually weaning them from their food, an hour at a time, until they are only eating during the cool of the night...again, so their hearts don't get stressed. I'll let them scrounge around for whatever bugs and grass seeds they can find in the yard during the day, but no feed. Otherwise they will eat so much and grow so quickly that they drop dead of a heart attack.

They are meat chickens...they are bred to grow to butcher weight fast...not to live for very long.

This is a dumb question, but if they're bred to get big and die - how did they get bred in the first place? Do they survive long enough to reproduce?

I should clarify that of course all chickens can be eaten, these are just bred to be really meaty...this is what you get in the supermarket. This breed is a commercial meat chicken that is genetically manipulated to grow the fastest on the least amount of feed.

There again, are more questions. How much will these chickens end up costing me? Are they cheaper than the chickens in the supermarket? (I doubt it.) Is the flavor of the meat so superior to that in the supermarket that it's worth the extra cost? Is it worth the extra cost just knowing that they were humanely treated all their lives? Some people might not think so...some might. I don't know yet!

See? All sorts of questions!

They are the result of the breeding two normal chickens. The parents don't die...the offspring do. I think the parentage is Cornish Game and Plymouth Rock.

Ah, that makes sense!

They're a weird hybrid chicken. Like a liger.

You know, if you're going to be talking about me, you should at least give me a courtesy ping.

That's exactly right...a cross-breed. Like a cross between a St. Bernard and a dachshund...a big dog with itty bitty legs. That is a facetious example, but you get my meaning...
