The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I don't have the book in front of me so I don't know.

I'm just looking for a general place you are at in the story, like whether you are still in The Shire, or have they left yet? Old Forest?

Oh, dear...

One of my rules is I won't name my kids anything from Tolkien or mythology, no matter how much I want to...

I do believe I'm at the point where they're out of the Shire. It's at the point where they meet the black horsemen on the road. I'll have to get the book later and make sure.

OK - that's close enough... I was just wanting to imagine how far you'd gotten is all, wondered what was about to happen to you next ;~D

So you're just now reading them for the first time? How cool!

Sometimes I wish I could forget all I know about the books and the movies and start again without any preconcieved ideas and with it all being new to me. Of course, I enjoy rereading 'em...and I notice new things every time I do, but there's something to be said for the wonder of reading a really amazing book - or books - for the first time. I envy you that! You'll have to let us know your thoughts as you go through them!

I'm so upset and put out...

You know Steve is compelled my his work to do this "voluntary" water monitoring...it's like an environmental task force made up of volunteers who monitor the quality of streams and rivers and such. Steve doesn't have any choice, he has to do it. He did have a choice of doing it during work hours or taking "comp time" and doing it on the weekend or in the evenings after work, which is a load of crap. I told him I didn't want him doing "work compelled" volunteering on his own time...comp time be damned. If it were overtime, mind you, I'd sing a different tune.

For five years he's been doing it and AS FAR AS I KNOW it's been during work hours.

I mean, he's never home because of school in the evening and I'm just not willing for him to not home in the evening because he has to do forced volunteer work!

So I went to see him at work Monday when I got the goat milk, since it was close by. He had all the stuff for this monitoring on his desk. I asked him "You're doing that today?" and apparently he *forgot* our conversation about the evening volunteering because he tells me "No, I can't do it during the day anymore, the guy I do the collecting with can't do it during the day anymore...he has to WORK."

Well, I said "Is he being forced to do this too? If so, can't he just tell his boss he has to do it during the day with you?" Steve says "Oh, he doesn't have a boss, he works for himself." So the guy has complete flexibility because he works for himself and if he doesn't he shouldn't be volunteering and making my husband spend time away from his family and classwork in the evening.

Well, I got pretty upset, reminded Steve how we had discussed this five years ago and that he needed to call the guy up and tell him he couldn't do it during the evening...he had to do it during work hours.

So then Steve says "I wish I hadn't told you." That's deceit. That made me feel worse. He realized that and told me he'd work it out.

Well, I've been trying to get in touch with him all evening, to no avail, to find out when he's coming home. No answer. So I emailed him and JUST NOW heard back. I asked him "Where have you been?"

He'd been doing the monitoring. After hours. I'm just sick.

I can't help it. The firstborn son gets the name 'John Paul' after the Pope. I get to name three after my favorite fantasy and scifi characters. Marriage is about compromise :o)

Heh...I've had at least half a dozen names picked out since I was a kid, practially. Coming from a big family where we're all happy with being from a big family and hoping for big families of our own...it was a topic of discussion - and gentle argument. "No, *I* claimed that name! You can't use it!"

*sigh*

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll get to use any at all.

On the bright side, my brother and my new sister-in-law are expecting their first in January. It's the first grandchild on our side, so we're pretty excited. I'm sure they're going to get REALLY sick of name suggestions. ;-)

I just got the Chunk-style's put back in their tote and washed away the poop in the grass where their tractor has been all day.

They're getting heavy! They actually feel like a chicken you get in the store! The hens never felt meaty...always kinda bony.

Just hang in there until the new job comes through!

On the bright side, it's not as bad as the sod farm. :)

Your

"it's not as bad as the sod farm"

reminded me of that Britishism

"Sod off."

This reminds me that the Earth's rotation has placed a significant portion of its mass between me and Sol*, and I should be tottering off to dreamland.

*By "Sol", I mean the Sun, not some ibbledick alter kocker from Miami Beach...
