The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I read an interesting bit of research a while back on Buddhist monks that migrated to England and eventually had very severe vitamin deficiencies not long thereafter. The researchers discovered that a veg-go diet in a western country is *very* different than in India... on account of there being so many insects in the grain in India. Good source of B-Vitamins among other things.

Ewwwwww!
I didn't need to know that.

Heh. Helps me keep perspective. So you think we're going to blow up the world? Funny - that coming from someone reduced to eating bugs for basic nutrition.

Something just 'clicked' on my ride home just now. I seemed to figure out what the gears were for. The last half of my trip took less than the first half, and it was uphill more. Woohoo! I feel good!
Hot, sweaty, and slightly sore, but good! 7 miles today, no problem!

I did that once. Looked down at the GPS to check my speed (24.x mph) on a down slope and looked up to see the trail had switched back the other way. Slammed on the breaks, went over the handles and landed sliding in a nice big stinging nettle patch. I wanted to be dead for the next 5 minutes. That was the SAME day and a mile or two before the little girl induced wreck. After that I disconnected the front brake for the rest of the year.

In college mom would call at like 8:30 or 9 on a saturday and seem suprised that I was still asleep.

Rose my bike back from a bar once. I happened to have it in my car and was in no shape to drive. For my good thinking I got a flat tire on my bike and 2 parking tickets on my car.

No REI here :( I sometimes hit one in Chicago. Got my main boots there. 80 miles? weeeeee. We have a 60 mile trail here that goes up to Waterloo. Someday I want to ride it, camp or stay and a hotel, and then ride back. The most I have done so far is about 31 miles. It gets pretty boring here in Iowa once you get out of town. Pretty though.
What's STP precious?

:D
Gears are your friends!
The better you get at using them the less work it is and the faster you can go. Even on small hills I go though 4 or 5 gears.
To: TalonDJ
Yeah, I was getting some decent speed - harder work than going real slow but the breeze it created was necessary. It was too hot to stop for more than a thirty second rehydration.
Forgot my sunblock, though, will probably be a lobster by nightfall.

get ya a small camelpack. or just get the bladder of one and put it in your normal backpack. Having the mouth piece right there on your shoulder strap to use makes hydration much simpler. Then again developing the no-hands riding skill is handy too.
To: TalonDJ
I wanted to be dead for the next 5 minutes. Yep. AND it was humiliating, in my case. I slowed a bit and jumped off the bike, and it turned out the grass was REALLY tall. I'd thought the ground was level with the trail, but it was just that the grass was so tall it hid a drop off. So I fell down the hill into the nettles and my bike landed on top of me. The guys were just behind me (I usually beat 'em on hills) and saw me disappear over the edge.
It seemed to take FOREVER for the stinging to quit. Ugh!

Stopping for thirty seconds every mile or so is not that bad a thing. Gives me a chance to catch my breath.
Camelpack might be a good thing down the road, though. Or the bladder. Might have to get one...

Mine is 2.5 liters and that is massive over kill for just about every ride I have ever taken. Come to think of it the only time I have run it out was on a gruling hike. The make some very nice smaller ones. 1 or 1.5 liters plus a water bottle two would do you even for very long rides.
To: RosieCotton
Going into them at 24+ mph was great because I had all those nice cuts and scrapes for them to soothe. On the upside they let me know I was quite definitely alive.
To: TalonDJ
A nice 24-oz bottle is about enough for riding home - getting there it's cool enough that I don't need to drink. Which is probably stupid but in the morning it's easier if I just don't stop.

3.5 in the cool of the morning? One can get that dehyrated drinking a diet soda and walking up some stairs.
To: TalonDJ
I drink a ton before I leave and a ton when I get there. I've got liquid with me, for at work, so if I feel the need I can stop.
Once I start carrying a load, I'll need to make plans for hydration. But then I'll be able to carry more than one bottle.
