Ewwwwww!
I didn't need to know that.
Heh. Helps me keep perspective. So you think we're going to blow up the world? Funny - that coming from someone reduced to eating bugs for basic nutrition.
Something just 'clicked' on my ride home just now. I seemed to figure out what the gears were for. The last half of my trip took less than the first half, and it was uphill more. Woohoo! I feel good!
Hot, sweaty, and slightly sore, but good! 7 miles today, no problem!
I did that once. Looked down at the GPS to check my speed (24.x mph) on a down slope and looked up to see the trail had switched back the other way. Slammed on the breaks, went over the handles and landed sliding in a nice big stinging nettle patch. I wanted to be dead for the next 5 minutes. That was the SAME day and a mile or two before the little girl induced wreck. After that I disconnected the front brake for the rest of the year.
In college mom would call at like 8:30 or 9 on a saturday and seem suprised that I was still asleep.
Rose my bike back from a bar once. I happened to have it in my car and was in no shape to drive. For my good thinking I got a flat tire on my bike and 2 parking tickets on my car.
:D
Gears are your friends!
The better you get at using them the less work it is and the faster you can go. Even on small hills I go though 4 or 5 gears.
Yeah, I was getting some decent speed - harder work than going real slow but the breeze it created was necessary. It was too hot to stop for more than a thirty second rehydration.
Forgot my sunblock, though, will probably be a lobster by nightfall.
*ducking*
Yep. AND it was humiliating, in my case. I slowed a bit and jumped off the bike, and it turned out the grass was REALLY tall. I'd thought the ground was level with the trail, but it was just that the grass was so tall it hid a drop off. So I fell down the hill into the nettles and my bike landed on top of me. The guys were just behind me (I usually beat 'em on hills) and saw me disappear over the edge.
It seemed to take FOREVER for the stinging to quit. Ugh!
Stopping for thirty seconds every mile or so is not that bad a thing. Gives me a chance to catch my breath.
Camelpack might be a good thing down the road, though. Or the bladder. Might have to get one...
Mine is 2.5 liters and that is massive over kill for just about every ride I have ever taken. Come to think of it the only time I have run it out was on a gruling hike. The make some very nice smaller ones. 1 or 1.5 liters plus a water bottle two would do you even for very long rides.
A nice 24-oz bottle is about enough for riding home - getting there it's cool enough that I don't need to drink. Which is probably stupid but in the morning it's easier if I just don't stop.
3.5 in the cool of the morning? One can get that dehyrated drinking a diet soda and walking up some stairs.
I drink a ton before I leave and a ton when I get there. I've got liquid with me, for at work, so if I feel the need I can stop.
Once I start carrying a load, I'll need to make plans for hydration. But then I'll be able to carry more than one bottle.
