The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

All we have to decide is what to do with the offer that is given us.

Steve took the day off from work. He still went to his office though and he's working on the paper. 2nd Draft goes in this afternoon.

That leaves just one more draft, then he defends it before the committee then he's done.

We're still looking at him being done some time in August.

Good for him!

Don't worry too very much about the defense. Once his draft is accepted, his advisor has a vested interest in him passing the oral defense. It's pretty rare for someone to fail that. I mean, it's not something he can blow off, but you're really, really almost done.

It's the third draft that worries me...he might have to tweek it and tweek it and tweek it!

I'm hoping not, but too much tweeking is gonna get on my nerves! LOL

We'll see. I don't know too much about it all and he seems pretty confident...

At this point, him getting another job is secondary...I just want him to come home. He mentioned going for his doctorate last night and I said "Fine...but not till after the boys have left home."

Hah! You tell him...

It'll be over soon. And then things will get better.

People don't want experience, though.

'Cept maybe this last job I applied for.

I dunno. All the administrative assistant type jobs turned me down, so I can't just move down. I still haven't applied for clerk type jobs...dunno if I should wait until I hear back from this one last job, or if I should assume I'm not gonna get it and start trying for bookstores or such like.

No luck on the temp front, huh? At least with a temp job you can quit without ruffling feathers and burning bridges. People who hire temps should expect (unless they're complete idiots) that you're going to bolt as soon as something permanent comes around.

Last interview I went on, they basically wanted a babysitter for the college grads who weren't up to snuff.

The only temp places I've found haven't had much in the way of openings. Maybe I'm not looking for them in the right places, I dunno.

No harm in waiting until you hear you make the final cut, right?

Heh...you could always hang around campus and panhandle. See how much you can take the liberal suckers for. :)

Just as an example...one of the places I've been watching right now is looking for furniture installers and med techs...wouldn't really be capable of either.

I've put my name in the pool at a few, but it sounds like tech jobs are all but impossible to get here.

I suppose worse case scenario is that I get a six dollar an hour job, or a couple of them...and then in a year I move somewhere with better employment options, and hope that my year of being out of the field isn't career suicide.

I'm having a hard time staying optimistic.
